Paul Tillich, Carl Jung and the Recovery of Religion

Paul Tillich, Carl Jung and the Recovery of Religion

$42.5

Is religion a positive reality in your life? If not, have you lost anything by forfeiting this dimension of your humanity? This book compares the theology of Tillich with the psychology of Jung, arguing that they were both concerned with the recovery of a valid religious sense for contemporary culture. Paul Tillich, Carl Jung and the Recovery of Religion explores in detail the diminution of the human spirit through the loss of its contact with its native religious depths, a problem on which both spent much of their working lives and energies. Both Tillich and Jung work with a naturalism that grounds all religion on processes native to the human being. Tillich does this in his efforts to recover that point at which divinity and humanity coincide and from which they differentiate. Jung does this by identifying the archetypal unconscious as the source of all religions now working toward a religious sentiment of more universal sympathy. This book identifies the dependence of both on German mysticism as a common ancestry and concludes with a reflection on how their joint perspective might affect religious education and the relation of religion to science and technology.Throughout the book, John Dourley looks back to the roots of both men’s ideas about mediaeval theology and Christian mysticism making it ideal reading for analysts and academics in the fields of Jungian and religious studies.

''Be glad and rejoice for your reward is very great in Heaven'': ''Reward'' in the theology of Thomas and Bonaventure.

”Be glad and rejoice for your reward is very great in Heaven”: ”Reward” in the theology of Thomas and Bonaventure.

$49.99

Throughout the history of Christian thought, theologians have affirmed almost unanimously that God and human beings play critical roles in the economy of salvation. Parsing their roles and assigning agency, however, has occasioned historical controversy and sustained difference. Thomas Aquinas and Bonaventure are two seminal, high scholastic figures that engage these questions and articulate distinctive answers. This study investigates their views of divine and human agency from the perspective of God’s reward of human action. It employs the theme of “journey” in order to plot moments of reward on an overarching movement of return to God, and in particular, it inspects their use of “reward texts” from scripture as a warrant for their speculative and systematic conclusions.;The dissertation traces the role of divine rewards and human action through the corpus of Thomas’s and Bonaventure’s works, including their constructive, biblical, and polemical writings. The first chapter introduces the idea of reward, particularly as a scriptural concept, and it argues for its utility in examining the roles of divine and human agency. Chapter two exposits Thomas’s systematic teaching on reward in the Summa theologiae as it arises principally from the treatise on grace and as it is deployed in his presentations of the beatitudes, the virtue of charity, and the effects of the Eucharist. Chapter three explores Thomas’s scriptural commentaries and argues for striking consistency in his overall view of reward, particularly through his use “ordinatio” as an organizing concept. Chapter four examines Bonaventure’s systematic and spiritual writings, including his Sentence Commentary, Breviloquium, Itinerarium Mentis in Deum, and Lignum Vitae, and it identifies a wider scope for human action and rewards made possible under the theme of divine “acceptatio. ” Chapter five investigates Bonaventure’s scripture commentaries, highlighting his strong emphasis on divine promises as indicative of

"Doug Harink’s commentary on the Petrine epistles aptly demonstrates the guiding principle of the series to which this volume belongs: ‘dogma clarifies rather than obscures.’ While paying close attention to the biblical text, Harink also opens up for the reader interconnected vistas in patristics, speculative theology, ethics, politics, philosophy, and aesthetics, as well as ‘some of the treasures of Orthodoxy.’ The book is especially helpful in that it speaks to the generalist while also refusing to back off from some of the more controversial passages in these biblical books. Even where the reader does not agree, he or she will not be bored!"–Edith M. Humphrey, William F. Orr Professor of New Testament, Pittsburgh Theological Seminary"No theologian over the past decade has been more concerned to articulate the apocalyptic heart of the gospel faithfully than Doug Harink. In this commentary, Harink brings that concern to bear on the message of 1 & 2 Peter. The result is a passionate book that allows Peter to take his place alongside Paul as an apostle of God’s world-transforming apocalypse in Jesus Christ. By way of insightful and provocative engagement with Petrine scholarship, contemporary theology, and critical theory, Harink brings the message of Peter into challenging conversation with the Constantinianism of contemporary North American culture. To those who feel acutely the weight of living as ‘exiles of the Diaspora’ in our culture today, the words of Harink’s book will break forth as an indispensable, powerful witness to the decisive and liberating grace alone by which we live into the ‘holiness and godliness’ that Peter names as a sign of the coming new creation in Christ."–Nathan R. Kerr, author of Christ, History and Apocalyptic: The Politics of Christian Mission; assistant professor of theology and philosophy, Trevecca Nazarene University

Identifying the theme of 1 Peter as how the church is to witness responsibly in a non-Christian world, Boring emphasizes the necessity of a sympathetic historical understanding of those parts of the letter that collide with modern cultural values and understandings of what Christian commitment and theology require. He gives special attention, as well, to the narrative world within which this ancient writer operated, and to the strong affirmation of ecumenism implicit in the letter’s amalgamation of traditions stemming from Peter and Paul, respectively. “Through the years, Professor Boring has shown himself to be a master of technical exegesis and theology wedded to great pastoral concern. These twin talents are fittingly brought to bear on a New Testament document that shows the same union of rich theology and pastoral care. Indeed, the sober, centrist, yet moving commentary squares perfectly with the sober, centrist, yet moving document that is 1 Peter. If this commentary is a popularization, then it is a popularization of very high caliber; a tremendous amount of research and insight is made available and intelligible to a wide public. This commentary is not just a rehash of what everyone else has said on 1 Peter. The innovative appendix detailing the narrative world of 1 Peter is alone worth the price of admission. All in all, an excellent contribution to present-day literature on an often neglected book of the New Testament.” –John P. Meier, The Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C.

1 and 2 Thesssalonians: A Socio-Rhetorical Commentary

$30

Pauls two letters to the Thessalonians stand as some of the very earliest Christian documents, yet they appear well into Pauls missionary career, giving them a unique context well worth exploring. In this first full-scale socio-rhetorical commentary on 1 and 2 Thessalonians, Ben Witherington gleans fresh insight from reading Pauls text in the light of rhetorical concerns and patterns, early Jewish theology, and the first-century historical situation in Macedonia.Witheringtons distinctive socio-rhetorical approach helps unearth insights that would otherwise remain hidden using only form criticism, epistolary categories, and traditional criticism. Witherington details Thessalonicas place as the metropolis of Macedonia, and he carefully unpacks the social situation of Paul and his recipients. Scholars will appreciate the careful analysis and rhetorical insights contained here, while Witheringtons clear prose and sensitivity to Pauls ideas make this work ideal for all who desire a useful, readable commentary on 1 and 2 Thessalonians.

10 Things Your Minister Wants to Tell You (But Can’t, Because He Needs the Job)

$16.95

“How did it all begin?” “What happens when we die?” These are just two of the questions Reverend Oliver “Buzz” Thomas hears centrist Christians asking as he travels across the U.S. and he knows that their voices are not being heard. They’re people of faith, not of politics, and they want more from their religion than a voter’s guide. In 10 Things Your Minister Wants to Tell You: But Can’t Because He Needs the Job, Rev. Thomas has written a book that will become the liberal Christian answer to The Purpose Driven Life. He writes sensitively about the reason we were put on this earth, the significance of the Bible and how one pleases God. He answers difficult, contemporary questions like “What about homosexuality?” and “What about other faiths?”. In 10 Things, Rev. Thomas weaves a Christian theology for today that people will embrace as a guide to sensible, modern living.

Joseph Kelley has written a short, accessible, thorough introduction to, and overview of, Christian teaching on death, judgment, hell and heaven, called in theology the four last things. Presented in the popular 101 Questions format, this book shows how these four topics, also referred to as Christian eschatology, have their ancient roots in the sacred books of the Hebrew Scriptures, especially in the later writings known as apocalyptic literature. The New Testament receives and builds upon Jewish thought and piety, finding in Jesus Christ a new revelation about the meaning of death, the nature of judgment, and God’s desire that all be saved and united through Christ in heaven. Kelley clearly presents the major theological ideas about the four last things that have emerged in Christian history, as well as the sacramental and pastoral practices surrounding death. This one-step guide to Catholic teaching on death, judgment, heaven, and hell is a one-of-a-kind book and will make informative, fascinating reading.

15 Days of Prayer with Johannes Tauler

$1.99

“15 Days of Prayer” CollectionNow distributed by New City Press, this popular series is perfect for those looking for an introduction to a particular spiritual guide, those searching for gift ideas and those who merely wish to know more about the person and his or her spirituality. Additional volume planned in 2 to 3 months intervals. Each volume contains:• A brief biography of the saint or spiritual leader introduced in that volume• A guide to creating a format for prayer and retreat• 15 meditation sessions with focus points and reflection guidesFollow in the footsteps of Johannes TaulerJohannes Tauler (c. 1300—1361), one of the great Rhineland mystics, was born to a prosperous and apparently religious family, both he and his sister entering religious orders at a young age. He began his Dominican novitiate in 1314 and spent several years studying logic, philosophy and theology before his ordination to the priesthood, after which he dedicated his life to the spiritual direction of Dominican nuns and the laity and above all to preaching. Under the influence of Meister Eckhart, Tauler developed a mystical approach to Christian spirituality rooted in the concept of God’s “birth” and continuing presence in the human soul.Make room for GodJohannes Tauler invites us to prepare the “ground of the soul” to receive God, so that the Word of God may be born in us as it is in Mary. Focusing on themes such as God in Creation and the return of all things to God, Tauler nevertheless insists that the union of the human soul with God is by grace and not by nature. Through prayer, we surrender our own striving and open our hearts to God’s purposes: this is not abandonment of moral purpose, however, but detachment and openness to the movements of the Holy Spirit. A 15-day retreat with Johannes Tauler, then, offers true depth to the soul that welcomes God.

He was an early church father and apologist, and his writings were formative in the early development of Christian theology. He was a disciple of Polycarp, who in turn was a disciple of John the Evangelist. Irenaeus’ best-known book, Adversus Haereses or Against Heresies (c. 180) is a detailed attack on Gnosticism, which was then a serious threat to the Church, and especially on the system of the Gnostic Valentinus. As one of the first great Christian theologians, he emphasized the traditional elements in the Church, especially the episcopate, Scripture, and tradition. Irenaeus wrote that … More:

 A Biblical Theology of Exile

A Biblical Theology of Exile

The Christian church continues to seek ethical and spiritual models from the period of Israel’s monarchy and has avoided the gravity of the Babylonian exile. Against this tradition, the author argues that the period of focus for the canonical construction of biblical thought is precisely the exile. Here the voices of dissent arose and articulated words of truth in the context of failed power. Author Biography: Daniel L. Smith-Christopher is Professor of Theological Studies and Director of Peace Studies at Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles, California. He is the author of the commentary on Daniel in The New Interpreter’s Bible (1997).

With the publication of his two early works, Black Theology & Black Power (1969) and A Black Theology of Liberation (1970), James Cone emerged as one of the most theological voices in North America. These books, which offered a searing indictment of white theology and society, introduced a radical reappraisal of the Christian message for our time. Joining the spirit of Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr., Cone radically reappraised Christianity from the perspective of the oppressed black community in North America. Forty years later, Cone”s work retains its original power, enhanced now by his reflections on the evolution of his own thinking and of black theology.

"Here we have a Catholic exegete, on the basis of a close analysis of the New Testament texts, challenging his church to a reexamination of its disciplinary tradition: if the meal practice of Jesus embodied a never-failing presence of the Lord to his ever-failing disciples, then should not the church think twice before excluding faltering members from communion? Moloney’s stimulating study gives food for thought even to Protestants who may consider that their own communion discipline has relaxed to the point of disappearance. In any case, this book makes a significant contribution to reflection on the ways to hold together the divine generosity in forgiveness, the call of sinners to repentance, and the responsibility of the church as beneficiary, messenger, and steward of the gospel."–Geoffrey Wainwright, Robert Earl Cushman Professor of Christian Theology, Duke University

Christian theology in opposition to the normal logic and common sense?

We've all heard the gospel of Christ's sacrifice died for our sins ….." and that's what we called the "Gospel of Jesus Christ." But curiously, Jesus Gospel preached to the people of Galilee (Matthew 4:23), and none of his statements on the United makes no reference to a sacrifice of blood. (He referred to his Kingdom Gospel more than 30 times) Common sense leads me to believe that the Kingdom that Jesus preached the Gospel has nothing to do with blood for sin. So popular are Christian theolgy opposition to this kind of logic normal … that Jesus Christ would have known and preached the true Gospel of Jesus Christ? "(It was no sacrifice). That's what I thought happened in the temple "is written in John, Jesus drove the animals twice a temple, a rope tied a boost to do. This could not have done to himself, his disciples have had to help him in his power have been hundreds, even thousands of animals for slaughter and held a man could not do that. Passing on some tables of the moneychangers and the release of some pigeons could have done by itself, but does not allow pets! This has angered the priests, who stopped the flow of shekels that the sacrifice has been done all over NIS. Jesus stop the senseless slaughter of animals died for it, and not the sins of humanity trying to test my site http://members.aol.com/theasender the Gospel of Thomas are all over the kingdom
