An Exploration of Christian Theology

An Exploration of Christian Theology

$34.99

“Beginning theology students often find themselves bewildered by a maze of beliefs represented in Christian history and tradition. Don Thorsen’s An Exploration of Christian Theology unravels the knots of theology by exploring the whole Christian tradition in a simple and straightforward way. Beginning with introductory chapters on theology, revelation, and authority, this book deals with biblical teaching and Christian tradition related to such topics as God, creation, sin, Jesus Christ, salvation, and eschatology. Chapters conclude with helpful questions for further reflection and discussion. The author’s own original line art, used throughout the text, keeps the reader’s feet on the ground with needed comic relief. A convenient glossary of theological terms makes this an even more useful tool. This is an excellent, college level introduction to Christian theology for classroom or individual use.”

$12.95

Joseph Kelley has written a short, accessible, thorough introduction to, and overview of, Christian teaching on death, judgment, hell and heaven, called in theology the four last things. Presented in the popular 101 Questions format, this book shows how these four topics, also referred to as Christian eschatology, have their ancient roots in the sacred books of the Hebrew Scriptures, especially in the later writings known as apocalyptic literature. The New Testament receives and builds upon Jewish thought and piety, finding in Jesus Christ a new revelation about the meaning of death, the nature of judgment, and God’s desire that all be saved and united through Christ in heaven. Kelley clearly presents the major theological ideas about the four last things that have emerged in Christian history, as well as the sacramental and pastoral practices surrounding death. This one-step guide to Catholic teaching on death, judgment, heaven, and hell is a one-of-a-kind book and will make informative, fascinating reading.

15 Days of Prayer with Johannes Tauler

15 Days of Prayer with Johannes Tauler

$1.99

“15 Days of Prayer” CollectionNow distributed by New City Press, this popular series is perfect for those looking for an introduction to a particular spiritual guide, those searching for gift ideas and those who merely wish to know more about the person and his or her spirituality. Additional volume planned in 2 to 3 months intervals. Each volume contains:• A brief biography of the saint or spiritual leader introduced in that volume• A guide to creating a format for prayer and retreat• 15 meditation sessions with focus points and reflection guidesFollow in the footsteps of Johannes TaulerJohannes Tauler (c. 1300—1361), one of the great Rhineland mystics, was born to a prosperous and apparently religious family, both he and his sister entering religious orders at a young age. He began his Dominican novitiate in 1314 and spent several years studying logic, philosophy and theology before his ordination to the priesthood, after which he dedicated his life to the spiritual direction of Dominican nuns and the laity and above all to preaching. Under the influence of Meister Eckhart, Tauler developed a mystical approach to Christian spirituality rooted in the concept of God’s “birth” and continuing presence in the human soul.Make room for GodJohannes Tauler invites us to prepare the “ground of the soul” to receive God, so that the Word of God may be born in us as it is in Mary. Focusing on themes such as God in Creation and the return of all things to God, Tauler nevertheless insists that the union of the human soul with God is by grace and not by nature. Through prayer, we surrender our own striving and open our hearts to God’s purposes: this is not abandonment of moral purpose, however, but detachment and openness to the movements of the Holy Spirit. A 15-day retreat with Johannes Tauler, then, offers true depth to the soul that welcomes God.

A Brief History of the Doctrine of the Trinity in the Early Church

A Brief History of the Doctrine of the Trinity in the Early Church

$78.24

Franz Dnzl gives an account of the formation of the doctrine of the Trinity in a narrative based on contemporary sources: as he remarks in the preface, he wants to describe the human struggle over the truth of the Christian image of God and as far as possible let the early Christians speak for themselves. His main concern is to describe the dynamic of the disputes over the theology of the Trinity in a vivid way which is easy to follow, pointing out the foundations of the doctrine and the decisive shifts in its development. He tries to see the often bitter discussion not as a barren dispute but as an evolutionary process in which the rivalry is a necessary and positive factor in moving the debate forward. After an introduction to the problem, the book describes the beginning of christology and the first models of the relationship between Father and Son it then describes the controversies leading up to the Council of Nicaea, which are discussed at length, going on to show how Nicaea didn’t settle the question and continuing the account up to the Council of Constantinople in 381. It brings out the political influences which governed this second stage of the discussion in an illuminating way. A survey and bibliography round the book off.

 A History of Political Thought

A History of Political Thought

$60.11

Janet Coleman’s two-volume history of European political theorizing from the ancient Greeks to the Renaissance is the introduction many have been waiting for.In this volume, Coleman discusses the acknowledged great works of Greek, Roman, and early Christian writers to provide a historical context for those political and ethical ideas that either became dominant or fell from dominance. Her lucid exploration also assists in explaining the ideas themselves. Throughout she draws on recent scholarly commentaries written by specialists in philosophy, contemporary political theory, classical languages and cultures, and ancient and early Christian history and theology. Ultimately, Coleman shows that the Greeks’ and Romans’ arguments can be seen as logical and coherent if we can grasp the questions they thought it important to answer.

From the father of Quakerism, a fascinating autobiographical account of his work, struggles, hardships, and successesComing from humble origins, George Fox spent years in search of spiritual enlightenment before experiencing several revelations, or “openings,” which became the basis of Quaker theology. After the formation of the Religious Society of Friends, or Quakers, in 1652, Fox and his associates suffered under brutal persecution from the English government. Fox’s Journal, initially dictated to his stepson-in-law when they were both imprisoned in the mid-1670s, combines burning rage against social injustice and a visionary sense of God “rising” through all creation with a forthright account of his own persecution and suffering. Written in a style that, in some respects, anticipates the work of James Joyce and other great modernists, it is, as Nigel Smith writes in his Introduction, not only “a classic of spiritual and autobiographical writing” but “an important literary achievement in its own right.”For this new edition Nigel Smith has “cleaned up” a difficult text to enhance the coherence of the main narrative while retaining the immediacy and excitement of the original. Four appendices–extracts from Fox’s letters, descriptions of his travels in Ireland and America, and William Penn’s Preface to the first printed edition–supplement the main text.

How can people celebrate the gospel of life in their daily lives? What about cloning? Is euthanasia morally acceptable in certain cases, such as terminal illness? In case of health reasons, mental illness, pregnancy due to rape, etc., is abortion morally acceptable? Are you in favor of the use of contraceptives, both natural and artificial? A Morally Complex World will not answer such complex questions in detail, but it does provide a framework for trying to grapple better with the first question of how we should lead our moral lives in general, as well as some of the concrete ethical issues the other three questions raise. A Morally Complex World is an accessible introduction to moral theology covering the methodology of moral theology; basic concepts such as conscience and moral agency; natural law, moral norms; how the Bible can be used in Christian ethics; how to dialogue on contested ethical issues; how to consider sin and moral failure; and finally how to mediate the moral principles and moral teaching in a pastorally sensitive manner in concrete life situations. Chapters are Mapping a Moral Methodology, The Natural Law and Moral Norms: Moving Along the Rational Claim Axis, Scripture and Ethics: Moving Along the Sacred Claim Axis, The Sanctuary of Conscience: Where the Axes Intersect, Modes of Moral Discourse: Navigating Towards a Common Ground, Navigating in the Morally Complex World: Casuistry with a Human Face, and Sin and Failure in a Morally Complex World.
