“The new Library of Episcopalian Classics features works by American Episcopalian authors whose books are timeless, prophetic, or of historical importance for the Church. Covering a wide variety of fields — history, spirituality, church management, and more — this series makes available to a new generation the books that helped shape the Episcopal Church as it is today.>This modern classic explores the key concepts and people who have shaped our Christian spiritual heritage. At the time it was first published, the author wrote, “This book is the result of finding nothing to recommend to my students as an introduction to the wide variety and great richness of the Christian spiritual experience. The texts available are either too detailed, too unbalanced, or both.” This situation remains the same today, more than twenty years later.>Now this concise and very readable introduction to Christian spirituality is available for a new generation of readers. Holmes begins with the Jewish antecedents, and proceeds through the New Testament period, monasticism, the Middle Ages, Byzantine spirituality, and the modern period. He ends his overview with key contemporary figures such as Simone Weil, Thomas Merton, and Martin Luther King, Jr. Brief bibliographies of the books written by each notable figure are included for those who wish to read more extensively.>A History of Christian Spirituality is the perfect book for introductory classes at the M. Div. level, for diaconate programs, lay people or parish study classes of all Christian denominations, and for any reference collection. This is a unique and invaluable learning tool and reference for readers, students, or teachers who want a quickexplanation of the significance of a person or idea, or who are interested in a broad overview of the entire field.”

“Exhaustive research on Celtic history and spirituality is the first of its kind.Did you realize that . . .* Celt is pronounced “kelt” and “selt?”* The most complete Celtic history begins around 500 B.C. and ends between 1830 and 1850?* Proto Celts dominated Europe at the time David became king of Israel?* Celtic “power” was the beginning of Celtic spirituality? * The Celtic Church existed at least a century prior to the Roman Catholic Church?* Writings on Celtic spirituality today is mostly topical (i.e. mythology, the early saints, and soul friendship)? * St. Patrick did not have one drop of Irish blood in his veins and he was born in Wales? When St. Patrick was called by God to minister in Ireland, he had not been ordained? * John Calvin’s life and theology played a significant part in the life of the Celtic Church?* In a recent survey of fifty-nine courses in seminaries across the United States, it was found that church history did not contain anything on the Celts or Celtic spirituality?* No single volume traces both the history and the spirituality of the Celts from 2250 B.C. to the present time? The voids in Celtic history and spirituality are contained in this volume, The Celts: Their Spirituality and Their Place in History.”

A Journey With Jonah

$13.65

The Book of Jonah, although a work of only two pages long, has made an extraordinary impact on the history of Jewish, Catholic, and Islamic spirituality. As the author demonstrates in this compact and readable book, the Book of Jonah emerges as perhaps the most profoundly Christian of all the books in the Hebrew Bible, and the book that speaks with the most telling resonance for our own age. The Book’s message is a serious and compelling one.

 A Life Pleasing to God

A Life Pleasing to God

Basil the Great (330-379) is one of the most important figures in Christian history and a theologian and spiritual teacher of ecumenical significance. At a time when the sources of their riche spiritual heritage are being re-appropriated by Christians of many traditions, it is strange that little attention has so far been given to Basilian spirituality. A Life Pleasing to God tells the story of Basil”s own spiritual development in the theologically turbulent fourth-century. Its core is a study of those passages of the Asceticon which illustrate his understanding of the foundation of the Christian life and lay out the possibilities, and problems, of Christian community.

$15.01

As Sara Wenger Shenk, President-Elect, Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary, puts it, “Rooting Mennonite spirituality within the earthy settledness of her grandmother’s story, Nelson lovingly shows the way toward a spirituality of pilgrimage, in the company of Jesus” In a book that is part narrative, part theology, part spiritual memoir, Dawn Ruth Nelson draws on a Mennonite background, encounter with Irish Catholic faith, and the spiritual life she discovers in her grandmother and her own everyday life to propose contemporary forms of spiritual formation and expression. “Although Nelson’s six suggestions for contemporary spirituality are focused on Mennonite tradition and experience,” observes Joann Wolski Conn, Professor of Christian Spirituality, Neumann University, “their transforming power make them applicable for anyone desiring Christian formation.” C. Arnold Snyder, Professor of History, Conrad Grebel University College, comments that “Nelson’s search leads from her grandmother’s life in Mennonite community, through peace work in Ireland and engagement with the Roman Catholic tradition, and finally to the essential inner/outer balance of the Anabaptist spiritual tradition-a response of discipleship made possible by the spiritual connection to the living vine, Jesus Christ.”

 A Patristic Greek Reader

A Patristic Greek Reader

$18.72

The heart of this book is a selection of Greek texts from early Christian writers, accompanied by notes so that a person with one year of Greek can read the texts. Basic translations of the texts are also provided so that readers can check their work. A list of words used 50+ times in the New Testament and the principal parts of several verbs is included. The Greek selections represent a variety of styles and levels of difficulty. The notes also vary, with very extensive notes provided in some cases. Passages that have played a major role in the history of Christian thought are included, as well as passages that contribute to matters of spirituality and pastoral care. Several passages are of more purely historical interest. The author includes an introduction to the writings of the early church to help orient readers to the writings of the Fathers in general and also give the rationale for the particular selections included in the book. Each selection also has a brief introduction discussing its historical setting and content. A brief bibliography is included for the particular selections included and for the Greek reference works cited. However, the book would also be of interest to those studying the Classics and could be used by anyone as a brief introduction to some samples of early Christian thought. This may be the only book available that provides such translation notes for selections from the Greek fathers.

A Place of Healing for the Soul: Patmos

A Place of Healing for the Soul: Patmos

$1.99

The tiny, arid Greek island of Patmos is one of the most sacred places in the Christian world, and a place of bewitching power, where people come for a brief summer visit and end up returning, year after year, for the rest of their lives. In A Place of Healing for the Soul, BBC commentator Peter France — who arrived on the island a hardened skeptic — tells how he came to change his life perspective. Learning from the island’s gregarious inhabitants and its religious eccentrics-hermits, ascetics, monks, and nuns — he discovered the pleasure and security of living simply and doing without, in a timeless realm where history, myth, and spirituality are endlessly alive.

A Republic of Mind and Spirit

This path-breaking book tells the story of American metaphysical religion more fully than it has ever been told before, along the way significantly revising the panorama of American religious history. Catherine L. Albanese follows metaphysical traditions from Renaissance Europe to England and then America, where they have flourished from colonial days to the twenty-first century, blending often with African, Native American, and other cultural elements. The book follows evolving versions of metaphysical religion, including Freemasonry, early Mormonism, Universalism, and Transcendentalism and such further incarnations as Spiritualism, Theosophy, New Thought, Christian Science, and reinvented versions of Asian ideas and practices. Continuing into the twentieth century and after, the book shows how the metaphysical mix has broadened to encompass UFO activity, channeling, and chakras in the New Age movement and a much broader new spirituality in the present. In its own way, Albanese argues, American metaphysical religion has been as vigorous, persuasive, and influential as the evangelical tradition that is more often the focus of religious scholars attention. She makes the case that because of its combinative nature its ability to incorporate differing beliefs and practices metaphysical religion offers key insights into the history of all American religions.

God is the primal and only original essence, and by Him the universe was created out of nothing. He exercises general and particular providence over all the created universe, material and spiritual. Our second interest is in the doctrine of man. Godcreated man in His own image, in the image of God created He him. With the exception of Tertullian, who was a traducianist, it was generally believed that the soul was created and that it was incor.

An unfortunate distinction between “venial” and “mortal” sins begins to be made, and in dealing with cases of “mortal” sin differences arose which led to numerous schisms. The most important of these were: the schism of Felicissimus of Carthage; the Novatian schism; and the Donatist schism, which arose at the opening of the next period. The Donatists, in addition to their disciplinary rigor, unduly exalted martyrdom so that many Christians sought it from purely fanatical motives. E. DOCTRINAL DEVELOPMENTS AND CONTROVERSIES Progress in Doctrine The advance in doctrinal ideas on fundamental questions is considerable. It is to be observed that along with the classification of central principles there appear also the beginnings of numerous errors which are to continue their growth until they almost destroy the spirituality of the church, and they are only to be checked by the Reformation in the sixteenth century. Among these developments our first interest is in the doctrine of God, since this is basal to all the rest. A Thankful Heart and a Discerning Mind: Essays in honour of John Newton

A Thankful Heart and a Discerning Mind: Essays in honour of John Newton

‘A Christ for All, A Church for All, A Theology for All’ is the abiding theme of the life of John Newton, one of British Methodism’s great pastors, educators, ecumenists and scholars. Rooted in the theology and spirituality of the Wesley brothers, John Newton showed himself to be very open to the insights of the wider Christian Church. In Liverpool, his friendship with Bishop David Sheppard and Archbishop Derek Worlock enabled him to express the ‘social’ Christianity of his upbringing through a fruitful ecumenical partnership that did much to help the city during a very troubled period. And when the centenary of Cardinal Newman’s death was commemorated in an ecumenical service at St Paul’s Cathedral, John was invited to preach. Now, in celebration of an active ministry that spanned thirty-five years before continuing well into retirement, international Methodist, Anglican and Roman Catholic scholars have contributed essays that reflect John Newton’s varied interests: Methodist history, spirituality, ecumenism, Mariology, theological education, Newman, preaching and theology. The book also includes a biography of John Newton by Henry Rack.

 A View From The Pew

A View From The Pew

The underlying thesis of “A View From The Pew” deals with the institution’s presentation of a god that micro-manages one’s life versus a god that allows a person more personal choices, along with personal responsibility. The institution assumes the role of God’s representative to the congregation and teaches them on a subject by subject basis to live and manifest their Christianity primarily through their attendance and support of the institution and its selected programs. Those institutions in question promote/emphasize (1) much praying, (2) much congregational praising of God. (3) Manifesting spirituality in their prepared “worship” programs, (4) reliance on God’s constant provision for their protection as well as their every need and/or want, (5) and, acceptance of life’s disappointments as having been allowed or approved by God. The congregations are admonished to read their Bible, but are taught only selective scripture that supports institutional doctrine. Some of that teaching is purposely taken out of context or misquoted entirely. God is presented only as a one-way street named LOVE. They claim that a true Christian will be an active participant in some local church. They do not want their authority challenged.Sermons have become less and less specific to audiences of a million different imaginary gods. PC’s gospel of “No absolutes” has hammered specific Bible teachings into the Christian history book. The thrust of those anemic sermons is to console, without offending. Much of the ongoing ministering to the congregation comes from the group’s ignorance of the Bible and how to live an overcoming Christian life. Dysfunctional families are createdand sustained as sheep to be tended by the shepherd called the institution. Many institutions have taken that as their primary role. They light the fires of confusion, then chase around in their “Dear Abby” role trying to put them out. It’s another form of job protection, perpetuated

test interpretation about religion Help please:)?

Hello:) I'm working on an essay for my religion class and I wonder if I could get feedback on what exactly the question is – I think I know what I would do, but I will not be misread: "Write a short essay in correlation with their spiritual understanding of Christian tradition "For me, that means writing about my personal beliefs correlate with the history of the Church. Does anyone else? I just want to make sure I'm not too far from the base. I need a good grade! Thank you! Maybe I should add that was not raised religious and I was at church Only a handful of times in my life – I'll take this course as a requirement of my academic career. My teacher understands that all people go to church, but he believes that everyone, even atheists (I am not an atheist), business beliefs about spiritualism and atheism in itself is actually a spiritual practice.

I think they want you to explain what they do or believe has to do with spiritual understanding of tradition Christian or belief. First Instead of understanding that Christ was God in the flesh and told me it was the only way to God. God wanted people to love as he does. Love is love is patient love is not selfish nature, etc. .. People use and their relatives. Not all people that God does. This is called a broken heart with an excellent view of God and the people who brought God through Jesus Christ, because belief in Jesus Christ is God can respond to God, because they live in Christ. Spiritually people live worship Jesus who is God in flesh we are. Since we die of evil that God brings us back to life by living in Jesus Christ who died and came back to life and takes us there. Death has not dominate over those of Jesus Christ. Because other religions are not of God, they do not teach the love of God that wants us to have. Not that God does not love them is that if you do not like him as he says, he will die spiritually. Where is God in heaven is where love is. This is more than you can imagine and evil is not allowed to stay there. Satan comes and goes sometimes ask God to let him hurt the people of God used to help people find God, but which expires at the end of this world. So all those who reject the love in turn be rejected by God and a place ideal for love again there. I know this can be a lot of understanding in some paragraphs and do not tend to talk a lot and may miss some points that are important, but these few basic principles on Christianity or God's call: the believers. I grew up as a "Christian" in a family that was not very "religious" either. It was not until I got older and asked what life would be I tried and found the answers that God gives you, if you look. It is popular to seek God because people do not want to do what God wants us to love each other. People want to do they want to do and not be embarrassed by God. The saddest thing that hurts is what Jesus said before he died to bridge the gap between God and men … said: "Forgive them for they know not what they do. "Everybody love is needed in God that He sent Jesus Christ was God in the flesh, and most of the world rejects it as their savior. The Life is in God who is love. As people are ignorant of him. May God forgive us, for we know not what we do. See what it is. Do not let anyone think for you. Not even a pastor, minister, etc. .. Read the words of God. You can say that are his, because it speaks to your soul. You just know. The reason of his wit. You can do it. Remember what God says is reality. Not many people. It only gives us this short life to seek and find. Then they will live and who mocked condemned. Choose life. You shall love the Lord thy God with all thy heart and with all your strength and with all thy mind and with all thy soul. The love for the person next to you as you would love itself. God is love. They do not want to hear a sermon and is probably not ready or willing to give one:) but only read and talk about things like help someone in need as well samaratin done. Lend a hand to someone who hurts, etc.. Christ encouraged people around them who were in difficulty or traveling. Has anyone ever said it would be and when they were crowned … examples as well. Have you ever shared something without being coherced? things like that. Kindness. Mercy. Be truthfull. I talked a lot. I think he should get the idea what you are looking and a little more about what it means to be Christian. Or that God calls us … Believers.
