‘In this moment, I felt strangely out of place, as though suddenly waking to find myself in someone else’s home. I sensed that I had become lost and needed to find my way back, and as I wondered whether love really could take me there, I glimpsed something. Out of the corner of my consciousness flashed a tiny ray of hope. In this ray was an invitation to be different. I never forgot it. And when the time was right, I caught myself beginning to follow it.’A Dove Flies charts a young woman’s amazing personal and spiritual journey through atheism and Islam to Christianity, and the discovery of abundance after a life spent in lack. It includes personal struggles, such as father loss, an eating disorder, and profound despair; and personal victories, including the recovery of self-worth, love, and faith. Combining reasoned argument with the compelling touch of personal testimony, infused with raw emotion and trenchant honesty, this book offers a fresh and insightful look at Christian faith and the universal search for meaning.”This is a remarkable story of faith and commitment, beautifully written by a young woman of courage and humility. The depth of her faith will inspire readers.” -William J. Tobin, Anchorage, Alaska “Ele Fay is a brilliant writer and thinker. Her path from Islam to Christianity, imbued with both discernment and heartache, inspires even as it gives witness to one of the most significant crucibles of the postmodern age.” -Jennifer Ferch, Vice President, NBC Camps”A Dove Flies contributes to an urgent contemporary narrative about faith and demonstrates striking courage and integrity of both word and deed. Suffering is not a prerequisite of religiousconviction, but one cannot help but be deeply moved by Ele’s story.” -Toby Wilkinson, artist

 A Life Of Joy

A Life Of Joy

$11.69

A Life of Joy is a book for every woman who’s ever pursued happiness. For many women, it’s been a disappointing search paved with anxiety and despair. Even Christian women struggle with feeling happy on a day to day basis. The pursuit of joy consumes our culture, yet depression and suicide rates keep rising. Something’s not working! The more women understand they will never find lasting gladness in temporal circumstances, the more they will seek the Source of true pleasure. Katie Hoffman explains lasting joy can be found, but only in Christ. Though temporal joy is fleeting, joy from God is eternal, indescribable, and full of glory. With stories from her own life, the author relates to women at every stage so they might come to know happiness in Jesus that has nothing to do with how things seem to be going. With twenty-two specific Biblical ways to obtain gladness, including prayer, fellowship, generosity, holiness and knowing God’s Word, and while covering many of the foundations of the Christian faith – it’s a book for for gift giving, personal use, or a group Bible study. This book seeks to show women that by having hope in God and by seeking Him in obedience, they can be freed from the bondage of anxiety, depression, and frustration.

A Life of Discovery: Michael Faraday, Giant of the Scientific Revolution

A Life of Discovery: Michael Faraday, Giant of the Scientific Revolution

$6.79

In a world of darkness perched on the edge of discovery, Michael Faraday lit up the world of science, contributed to the Industrial Revolution, and changed the lives of everyone on Earth. Now a superb new biography illuminates the life of this amazing, reclusive, deeply contradictory man. Born in 1791, Faraday was the son of a blacksmith with a thin education, yet he was gifted with a rare intelligence and intuition. He was a devout member of a small Christian sect that believed in the Bible’s literal word, yet he was open to all that humankind could invent from earthly knowledge. He was ambitious and savvy about spreading news of his work, yet he patented nothing and received no personal gain. In short, Faraday personified all the paradoxes of the early nineteenth century, a landscape in which class, faith, and desire clashed. As apprentice to the esteemed Humphrey Davy of the Royal Institution, he helped discover the miner’s safety lamp, which revolutionized the search for and accumulation of coal, then went on to make a landmark study of induction, the connection between electricity and magnetism, and the idea of the electromagnetic field. From electric motors to precision-made eyeglass lenses to steel razors to liquid chlorine, his inventions-often designed with self-created instruments-have become staples of civilized society, the roots of modern life. While rising in society, Faraday steered clear of politics and the seamy machinations of the material world, staying obedient to a higher authority. Though disdainful of useless passion and devoted to his wife, he found a confidante in the bright, liberated, and flirtatious daughter of Lord Byron. Trying to reconcilehis severe religion and his demanding work, he eventually suffered a mental collapse. An acclaimed biographer of artists, James Hamilton now captures the entire fascinating story of this individual and his era. A Life of Discovery is the definitive account of a remarkable man who

THE MANIFESTATION OF CHRIST TO THE GENTILES. ” Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the days of Herod the king, behold there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, saying, Where is He that is born king of the Jews ? for we have seen His star in the east, and are come to worship Him. When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born. And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judea : for thus it is written by the prophet, And thou, Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda : for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule My people Israel. Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, inquired of them diligently what time the star appeared. And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child ; and when ye have found Him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship Him also. When they had heard the king, they departed ; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went beforethem, till it came and stood over where the young child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary His mother, and fell down and worshipped Him : and when they had opened their

Threshold Bible Study is a thematic Scripture series designed for both personal study and group discussion. The thirty lessons in each study may be used by an individual for daily study over the course f a month or they may be divided into six lessons per week, providing a group study of six weekly sessions. Through the spiritual disciplines of Scripture reading, study, reflection, conversation, and prayer, readers will cross the threshold to a more abundant dwelling with God. Ideal for Bible study groups, small Christian communities, parish leadership teams, adult faith formation, student Scripture-study groups, RCIA teams, catechumens and candidates, catechists and teachers. The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light 9Is 9:2). Advent is a time for new understanding, for putting different pieces of God’s revelation together so as to see the divine plan more clearly. We listen to the words of the ancient prophets, to the wisdom of Jesus, to the stories of his birth and infancy, and we make connections. Then we connect those truths to our own lives and our world and see how God is acting anew, how God continues to reveal the coming of Jesus today. Our best model for this Advent search for understanding is Mary of Nazareth. By making connections between the ancient and the new, between her people Israel and her own life, Mary grew in understanding of God’s plan and responded to God’s will with her acceptance: Let it be with me according to your word (LK 1:38).

 Announcing The Reign Of God

Announcing The Reign Of God

$17.94

This book offers a program for Christian evangelism based on the teachings of Jesus in Matthew, Mark, and Luke. This is a superb resource volume for those wishing to test the soundness of their understanding and practice of Christian evangelism. It is solidly grounded in the ministry of Jesus and illumined by testimonial statements and experiences drawn from a cosmopolitan variety of witnesses. . .[Arias's] key contribution is the rehabilitation of the Kingdom of God as the controlling perspective for the proclamation of the gospel in word and deed. In a style helpful to scholar and nonscholar, he combs biblical sources, especially the Synoptic Gospels, in search of Jesus’ own practice. The hermeneutical outlook is clearly dictated by Arias’s own battle-tested experience in Bolivia, where he was bishop of the Methodist Church and where he underwent imprisonment as a consequence of his evangelistic practice. After reading this book, dichotomies are inexcusable:- proclamation or social responsibility- intra-church or extra-church evangelization- the conversion of individuals or conversion of communities.[This book] should become at least a minor classic.–Jorge Lara-Braud, Theology TodayChapter titles:The Good News of the Kingdom The Presence of the Kingdom The Imminence of the Kingdom The In-Breaking of the Kingdom The Eclipse of the Kingdom Announcing the Kingdom as Gift Announcing the Kingdom as Hope Announcing the Kingdom as Challenge End of the Eclipse?Mortimer Arias was Methodist bishop in Boliva, Professor of Hispanic Studies and Evangelization at the School of Theology, Claremont, and a member of the World Council of Churches’ Commission on world Mission and Evangelism. With his wife, Esther, he coauthored the popular book The Cry of My People.

C.S. Lewis and the Search for Rational Religion: Revised and Updated Edition

C.S. Lewis and the Search for Rational Religion: Revised and Updated Edition

$4

C. S. Lewis was perhaps the most influential Christian apologist of the 20th century. An Oxford don and former atheist who converted to Christianity in 1931, he gained a wide following during the 1940s as the author of a number of popular books like Mere Christianity, Miracles, and The Problem of Pain in which he argued for the truth of Christianity. Today his reputation is greater than ever–partly because of his books and partly because of movies like “Shadowlands” and “The Chronicles of Narnia.” In advocating Christianity, Lewis did not appeal to blind faith, but to reason. Convinced that Christianity is rationally defensible, he boldly declared: I am not asking anyone to accept Christianity if his best reasoning tells him that the weight of the evidence is against it.” But do Lewis’s arguments survive critical scrutiny? In this revised and expanded version of his book, originally published in 1985, philosopher John Beversluis takes Lewis at his word, critically examines his “case for Christianity,” and concludes that it fails. Beversluis examines Lewis’s Argument from Desire–the “inconsolable longing” that he interpreted as a pointer to a higher reality; his Moral Argument for the existence of a Power behind the moral law; and his Argument from Reason–his contention that reason cannot be adequately explained in naturalistic terms. He also examines Lewis’s solution of the Problem of Evil, which many philosophers think is a decisive objection to belief in Christianity. In addition, he considers issues in the philosophy of religion that developed late in Lewis’s life–such as Antony Flew’s criticisms of Christian theology. He concludes with a discussion ofLewis’s crisis of faith after the death of his wife and answers the question: Did C. S. Lewis lose his faith? In the process, Beversluis replies to critics of the first edition of his book, thereby responding not only to Lewis but to the whole Lewis movement–that cadre of expositors,

 Christian, Evangelical, and Democrat?

Christian, Evangelical, and Democrat?

$0.99

“For too long the polarization between the Religious Right and the secular left has paralyzed us. Our need is not simply for a Religious Left, although that might be part of the solution. What we need most now is Christians in both major parties, and other “third” parties too, who commit themselves to raise the level of discourse above bitter argument, mutual caricaturing, and divisive win-lose politics. We need committed Christians who care for the common good, who seek to be uniters rather than dividers, in deed and not just in word, who let their faith modify their politics rather than the reverse, who are suspicious of “graven ideologies,” and who love their political counterparts by refusing to see them as enemies, treating them instead as beloved neighbors. We need people of faith who search the Scriptures, not for proof-texts to support the policies about which they’ve already made up their minds, but rather for new truths that will stretch their political and social understandings beyond the planks of any party. That describes Dr. Hunter’s aim in this important and well-written book.In spite of the word “Democrat” in the title, Dr. Hunter isn’t interested in getting Republicans to switch parties. He wants to help Christians – and especially evangelical Christians – see that their first loyalty is to a King and kingdom higher than any “principality or power” on earth. If we get that straight, we can expect a revolution of goodness and peace to continually unfold. The effects of that revolution will make themselves felt in the areas of economics, ecology, sexuality and family, poverty, education, the arts, racial reconciliation, the media, religion, and yes, even politics.” –Brian D. McLaren, author of A Generous Orthodoxy (anewkindofchristian.com), from the Foreword

Derhetorizing Paul: A Dynamic Perspective on Pauline Theology and the Law

Derhetorizing Paul: A Dynamic Perspective on Pauline Theology and the Law

$4

When we read 1 Thessalonians 1:8, Paul seems to be calling for an end to all missionary activity: “In every place your faith toward God has gone forth, so that we have no need to speak a word.” Given what we know about Paul, this notion strikes Christian readers as very curious.According to Lauri Thurén, Paul and his listeners would find modern Pauline scholarship and interpretation equally curious. Expressions like the one from 1 Thessalonians were never meant to be taken at face value, and have promoted sophisticated but erroneous theological and historical reflections. These errors are due not only to the scholarly ignorance of ancient rhetorical and epistolary conventions, but also to a static attitude toward the text itself. Thurén offers a different kind of study, one based on a natural and dynamic reading of Paul’s letters. These letters need to be stripped of rhetoric, he says, in order to describe any theology beyond the texts. This means identifying persuasive devices in Pauline texts in order to filter out their effect on the theological ideas expressed. Thurén applies this principle to a controversial issue in Pauline theology, the question of law. He claims that Paul’s exaggerated statements correspond to his hyperbolic way of thinking. Paul’s search for consistency on the Old Testament, Thurén claims, was a major reason for his revolt against the Law. Derhetorizing Paul offers a bold new reading of Paul’s letters and a striking reinterpretation of Pauline theology. Author Biography: Lauri Thurén is Senior Research Fellow at the Academy of Finland and is the author of Argument and Theology in 1 Peter.

Fellowship With God In Spirit And Truth

Fellowship With God In Spirit And Truth

$1.99

This is the final book in the three book “Fellowship” series and contains a comprehensive glossary that covers the subject material in all three, which is a great help to pastors, Bible study teachers or group leaders, as well as the individual reader, to find related texts and their explanation. A unique feature of these books is that each chapter is independent of the others so study can be selected at random to grow in understanding of God’s word according to the need of the class or reader. One reason for texts next to the subjects being studied is to emphasize that all insights explained are not just an opinion but can be confirmed by a biblical search into the deeper truths of God’s revelation to us with the Holy Spirit as our guide (1 Cor. 2:1-13). Read the comments in the foreword list.William H. Mulder The author from his earliest childhood memory believed in Jesus and took a public stand for Christ in his late teens. The urge to write was there in early youth and resulted in a published nature story at age thirteen. Many poems followed but writing slowed while raising and providing a good home and a Christian education for seven children. But when Israel became a nation again in 1948, in response to questions asked by others, he wrote in essay form Bible based answers about many things. These typed handouts, some fifty years old, but now updated to be relevant for today, provide the basis for all the Fellowship series. As a former deacon, elder and as a trained evangelist he challenges everyone to build their Christian faith on biblical truth. These books help you find them.
