$48.5

Series:Studies in Theology and Religion (STAR), Am 15.

 1 & 2 Timothy, Titus

1 & 2 Timothy, Titus

$29.99

In this 22nd volume of the Believers Church Bible Commentary series, Paul M. Zehr explores Pau”s instructions to Timothy and Titus in light of recent scholarship, applying Christian theology and ethics to the political, philosophical, religious, and cultural issues that early Christians faced as the church reached out in mission in Ephesus and on the island of Crete.

 1 and 2 Chronicles

1 and 2 Chronicles

$138.35

This two-part commentary argues that Chronicles, placed as it is among the ‘historical books’ in the traditional Old Testament of the Christian church, is much misunderstood. Restored to its proper position as the final book in the canon as arranged in the order of the Hebrew Bible, it is rather to be understood as a work of theology essentially directed towards the future. The Chronicler begins his work with the problem facing the whole human race in Adam-the forfeiture of the ideal of perfect oneness with God’s purpose. He explores the possibility of the restoration of that ideal through Israel’s place at the centre of the world of the nations. This portrayal reaches its climax in an idealized presentation of the reign of Solomon, in which all the rulers of the earth, including most famously the Queen of Sheba, bring their tribute in acknowledgment of Israel’s status (Volume 1). As subsequent history only too clearly shows, however, the Chronicler argues (Volume 2), that Israel itself, through unfaithfulness to Torah, has forfeited its right to possession of its land and is cast adrift among these same nations of the world. But the Chronicler’s message is one of hope. By a radical transformation of the chronology of Israel’s past into theological terms, the generation whom the Chronicler addresses becomes the fiftieth since Adam. It is the generation to whom the jubilee of return to the land through a perfectly enabled obedience to Torah, and thus the restoration of the primal ideal of the human race, is announced.

 1 and 2 Thesssalonians: A Socio-Rhetorical Commentary

1 and 2 Thesssalonians: A Socio-Rhetorical Commentary

$30

Pauls two letters to the Thessalonians stand as some of the very earliest Christian documents, yet they appear well into Pauls missionary career, giving them a unique context well worth exploring. In this first full-scale socio-rhetorical commentary on 1 and 2 Thessalonians, Ben Witherington gleans fresh insight from reading Pauls text in the light of rhetorical concerns and patterns, early Jewish theology, and the first-century historical situation in Macedonia.Witheringtons distinctive socio-rhetorical approach helps unearth insights that would otherwise remain hidden using only form criticism, epistolary categories, and traditional criticism. Witherington details Thessalonicas place as the metropolis of Macedonia, and he carefully unpacks the social situation of Paul and his recipients. Scholars will appreciate the careful analysis and rhetorical insights contained here, while Witheringtons clear prose and sensitivity to Pauls ideas make this work ideal for all who desire a useful, readable commentary on 1 and 2 Thessalonians.

101 Questions and Answers on the Four Last Things

101 Questions and Answers on the Four Last Things

$9.13

Joseph Kelley has written a short, accessible, thorough introduction to, and overview of, Christian teaching on death, judgment, hell and heaven, called in theology the four last things. Presented in the popular 101 Questions format, this book shows how these four topics, also referred to as Christian eschatology, have their ancient roots in the sacred books of the Hebrew Scriptures, especially in the later writings known as apocalyptic literature. The New Testament receives and builds upon Jewish thought and piety, finding in Jesus Christ a new revelation about the meaning of death, the nature of judgment, and God’s desire that all be saved and united through Christ in heaven. Kelley clearly presents the major theological ideas about the four last things that have emerged in Christian history, as well as the sacramental and pastoral practices surrounding death. This one-step guide to Catholic teaching on death, judgment, heaven, and hell is a one-of-a-kind book and will make informative, fascinating reading.

Free updates online. Not illustrated. Excerpt: The Summa Theologica (Latin: “Summary of Theology” or “Highest Theology”) or the Summa Theologiæ or simply the Summa, written 12651274) is the most famous work of Thomas Aquinas (c. 12251274), although it was never finished. It was intended as a manual for beginners as a compilation of all of the main theological teachings of the time. It summarizes the reasoning for almost all points of Christian theology in the West, which, before the Protestant Reformation, subsisted solely in the Roman Catholic Church. The Summa’s topics follow a cycle: the existence of God; God’s creation, Man; Man’s purpose; Christ; the Sacraments; and back to God. It is famous for its five arguments for the existence of God, the Quinquae viae (Latin: five ways). Throughout his work, Aquinas cites Augustine of Hippo, Aristotle, and other Christian, Jewish, Muslim and ancient pagan scholars. The Summa Theologica is a more mature and structured version of Aquinas’s earlier Summa contra Gentiles. This earlier work was more apologetic, each article refuting a belief of a heresy. The Summa is composed of three major parts, each of which deals with a major subsection of Christian theology. Each part contains several questions, each of which revolves around a more specific subtopic; one such question being “Of Christ’s Manner of Life.” Each question contains several articles, which are phrased as interrogative statements dealing with specific issues, such as “Whether Christ should have led a life of poverty in this world?” The Summa has a standard format for handling each article. This method of exposition is derived from Averroes, to whom Aquinas refers respectfully as “the Commentator.” The Summa makes many references to certain

“15 Days of Prayer” CollectionNow distributed by New City Press, this popular series is perfect for those looking for an introduction to a particular spiritual guide, those searching for gift ideas and those who merely wish to know more about the person and his or her spirituality. Additional volume planned in 2 to 3 months intervals. Each volume contains:• A brief biography of the saint or spiritual leader introduced in that volume• A guide to creating a format for prayer and retreat• 15 meditation sessions with focus points and reflection guidesFollow in the footsteps of Johannes TaulerJohannes Tauler (c. 1300—1361), one of the great Rhineland mystics, was born to a prosperous and apparently religious family, both he and his sister entering religious orders at a young age. He began his Dominican novitiate in 1314 and spent several years studying logic, philosophy and theology before his ordination to the priesthood, after which he dedicated his life to the spiritual direction of Dominican nuns and the laity and above all to preaching. Under the influence of Meister Eckhart, Tauler developed a mystical approach to Christian spirituality rooted in the concept of God’s “birth” and continuing presence in the human soul.Make room for GodJohannes Tauler invites us to prepare the “ground of the soul” to receive God, so that the Word of God may be born in us as it is in Mary. Focusing on themes such as God in Creation and the return of all things to God, Tauler nevertheless insists that the union of the human soul with God is by grace and not by nature. Through prayer, we surrender our own striving and open our hearts to God’s purposes: this is not abandonment of moral purpose, however, but detachment and openness to the movements of the Holy Spirit. A 15-day retreat with Johannes Tauler, then, offers true depth to the soul that welcomes God.

Free updates online. Not illustrated. Excerpt: The Age of Reason; Being an Investigation of True and Fabulous Theology is a deistic pamphlet, written by eighteenth-century British radical and American revolutionary Thomas Paine, that criticizes institutionalized religion and challenges the legitimacy of the Bible. Published in three parts in 1794, 1795, and 1807, it was a bestseller in America, where it caused a short-lived deistic revival. British audiences, however, fearing increased political radicalism as a result of the French Revolution, received it with more hostility. The Age of Reason presents common deistic arguments; for example, it highlights what Paine saw as corruption of the Christian Church and criticizes its efforts to acquire political power. Paine advocates reason in the place of revelation, leading him to reject miracles and to view the Bible as an ordinary piece of literature rather than as a divinely inspired text. It promotes natural religion and argues for a creator-God. Most of Paine’s arguments had long been available to the educated elite, but by presenting them in an engaging and irreverent style, he made deism appealing and accessible to a mass audience. The book was also inexpensive, putting it within the reach of a large number of buyers. Fearing the spread of what they viewed as potentially revolutionary ideas, the British government prosecuted printers and booksellers who tried to publish and distribute it. Paine nevertheless inspired and guided many British freethinkers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and his influence and spirit endures in the works of contemporary
