1508 Works: 1508 Architecture, 1508 Paintings, 1508 Plays, the Deposition, St Mary Magdalene, Taunton, San Rocco, Venice, Bovo-Bukh $14.14 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: The Bovo-Bukh (“Bovo book”; also known as Baba Buch , etc.), written in 15071508 by Elia Levita , was the most popular chivalric romance in the Yiddish language . It was first printed in 1541, being the first non-religious book to be printed in Yiddish. For five centuries, it endured at least 40 editions. It is written in ottava rima and, according to Sol Liptzin, is “generally regarded as the most outstanding poetic work in Old Yiddish”. The theme derives from the Anglo-Norman romance of Sir Bevis of Hampton , by way of an Italian poem that had modified the name Bevis of Hampton to Buovo d’Antona and had, itself, been through at least thirty editions at the time of translation and adaptation into Yiddish. The central theme is the love of Bovo and Druziane. , The story “had no basis in Jewish reality”, but compared to other chivalric romances it “tone down the Christian symbols of his original” and “substitute Jewish customs, Jewish values and Jewish traits of character here and there…” The character was also popular in Russian folk culture as Prince Bova .The Bovo-Bukh later became known in the late 18th century as the Bove-mayse or “Bovo’s tale”. This name, in turn, was corrupted and passed into the Yiddish language as bubbe meise , literally “grandmother’s tale”, meaning “old wives’ tale”. Plot summary Based on Sol Liptzin , A History of Yiddish Literature , pp. 6-7.Bovo’s young mother conspires to have her husband, an aged king, killed during a hunt, then marries the murderer. They try and fail to poison the child Bovo, whom they are afraid will avenge his father. The handsome youth runs away from Antona, is kidnapped and taken to Flanders to be stable boy to a king, whose daughter Druzane falls in love with him.The heathen sultan of Babylonia arrives, backed by ten |

1909 Introductions $21.18 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: The Rider-Waite tarot deck is the most popular Tarot deck in use today in the English-speaking world (The Tarot de Marseille being the most popular deck in Latin countries). Other suggested names for this include the Rider-Waite-Smith, Waite-Smith, Waite-Colman Smith or simply the Rider deck. The cards were drawn by illustrator Pamela Colman Smith from the instructions of academic and mystic A. E. Waite, and published by the Rider Company. While the images are deceptively simple, almost child-like, the details and backgrounds hold a wealth of symbolism. The subjects remain close to the earliest decks, but usually have added details. Significantly, Waite had the Christian imagery of older tarot decks’ cards toned downthe “Pope” card became the “Hierophant”, the “Papess” became the “High Priestess”. The Minor Arcana are also, as in the earlier Sola Busca Tarot, fully illustrated with designs created by Smith. The chief aesthetic objection to this deck is the crude printing of colours in the original: several decks, such as the Universal Waite deck, simply copy the Smith line drawings, but with more sophisticated coloring. Pamela Colman Smith Arthur Edward WaiteThe cards were originally published in December 1909. The symbols used were influenced by the 19th century magician and occultist Eliphas Levi. In 1910, The Key to the Tarot by A.E. Waite was published, providing an overview of the traditions and history behind the cards, criticism of various interpretations, and extensive descriptions of their symbols. In 1911, a revised version, The Pictorial Key to the Tarot was published featuring 78 black and white plates of each card in the deck. U.S. Games currently claims copyright on the cards, although the actual copyright may only be valid on c… More: |

9th-Century Christian Texts $9.16 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Chapters: Book of Armagh, Chronicle of Seert, de Divisione Naturae, Expositio in Matthaeum Evangelistam, Drogo Sacramentary, Actus Pontificum Cenomannis, Book of Nunnaminster, Expositiuncula in Ioannem Evangelistam, Exposito En Brevis in Lucam. Excerpt: The Book of Armagh or Codex Ardmachanus (ar or 61), also known as the Canon of Patrick and the Liber Ar(d)machanus, is a 9th-century Irish manuscript written mainly in Latin. It is held by the Library of Trinity College, Dublin (MS 52). The document is valuable for containing early texts relating to St Patrick and some of the oldest surviving specimens of Old Irish and for being one of the earliest manuscripts produced by an insular church to contain a near complete copy of the New Testament. The manuscript was once reputed to have belonged to St. Patrick and, at least in part, to be a product of his hand. Research has determined, however, that the earliest part of the manuscript was the work of a scribe named Ferdomnach of Armagh (died 845 or 846). Ferdomnach wrote the first part of the book in 807 or 808, for Patrick’s heir (comarba) Torbach. Two other scribes are known to have assisted him. The people of medieval Ireland placed a great value on this manuscript. It was one of the symbols of the office for the Archbishop of Armagh. The custodianship of the book was an important office that eventually became hereditary in the MacMoyre family. It remained in the hands of the MacMoyre family in the townland of Ballymoyer near Whitecross, County Armagh until the late 17th century. By 1707 it was in the possession of the Brownlow family of Lurgan. It remained in the Brownlow family until 1853 when it was sold to the Irish antiquary, Dr William Reeves. In 1853, Reeves sold the Book to John George de la Poer… More: |

A Companion To Wagner’s Parsifal $90 Richard Wagner’s Parsifal remains an inexhaustible yet highly controversial work. This stage consecration festival play, as the composer described it, represents the culmination of his efforts to bring medieval myth and modern music together in a dynamic relationship. Wagner’s engagement with religion–Buddhist as well as Christian–reaches a climax here, as he seeks through artistic means to rescue the essence of religion by perceiving its mythical symbols . . . according to their figurative value, enabling us to see their profound, hidden truth through idealized representation. The contributors to this collection break fresh ground in exploring the text, the music, and the reception history of Parsifal. Wagner’s borrowings-and departures-from the medieval sources of the Grail legend, Wolfram’s Parzival and Chritien’s Perceval, are considered in detail, and the tensional relation of the work to Christianity is probed. New perspectives emerge that bear on the long genesis of the text and music, its affinities to Wagner’s earlier works, particularly Tristan und Isolde, and the precise way in which the music was composed. Essays address the work’s bold, modernistic musical language and its unprecedented soundscape involving hidden choruses and other unseen sources of sound. The turbulent, astonishing, and sometimes disturbing history of Parsifal performances from 1882 until 2004 is traced in vivid detail for the first time, demonstrating the abiding fascination exerted by this uniquely challenging work of art. Contributors: Mary A. Cicora, James M. McGlathery, Ulrike Kienzle, Warren Darcy, Roger Allen. William Kinderman and Katherine Syer teach at the University of Illinois atUrbana-Champaign, and often lead study seminars during the Wagner Festival in Bayreuth, Germany. |
