Read a passage, interpret it, and still they ask, “So, what difference does that make in my life?”> >In the “Life Essentials Study Bible,” renowned Bible teacher Gene Getz complements the full text of the popular HCSB translation by elaborating on 1,500 principles in Scripture that are as relevant today as when the sixty- six books of the Bible were written. Distilling these truths into principles, Getz helps the reader more easily remember and effectively apply the Bible’s wisdom to everyday life. He explains how each of these principles represents a supracultural truth – one that can and should be applied at any moment in history and in every cultural situation.> >In addition, the “Life Essentials Study Bible” was created with an integrated digital study system–more than 250 hours of free online coaching content led by Getz–that fosters a greater understanding of the Bible’s grand story.> >Along the way, Getz adds pertinent questions in print to inspire personal reflection or group discussion of each principle. Methodical Bible Study $19.99 “Inductive study compares related Bible texts in order to let the Bible interpret itself, rather than approaching Scripture with predetermined notions of what it will say. Dr. Traina’s Methodical Bible Study was not intended to be the last word in inductive Bible study; but since its first publication in 1952, it has become a foundational text in this field. Christian colleges and seminaries have made it required reading for beginning Bible students, while many churches have used it for their lay Bible study groups. Dr. Traina summarizes its success in this comment: “If the truths of the Bible already resided in man, there would be no need for the Bible and this manual would be superfluous. But the fact is the Bible is an objective body of literature which exists because man needs to know certain truths which he himself cannot know. There are two main approaches open to the Bible student. One is deduction, which begins with generalizations and moves for their support to the particulars. By its very nature deduction tends to be subjective and prejudicial. Its opposite, induction, is objective and impartial; for it demands that one first examine the particulars of the Scriptures and that one’s conclusions be based on those particulars. Such an approach is sound because, being objective, it corresponds to the objective nature of the Scriptures.” This book fills the need for a simple, practical textbook in hermeneutics. It encourages the serious Bible student to practice the best kind of hermeneutic, which allows the Word of God to speak for itself.” |

”Oh, for a thousand tongues to sing”: Music and worship in African American megachurches of Los Angeles, California. $49.99 This dissertation is an ethnographic account of African American sacred music performed in the worship services of African American megachurches in Los Angeles, California. A megachurch is a church with a congregation of at least five thousand members or one whose Sunday morning services has at least twenty-five hundred people in attendance. To illustrate how African American religious music traditions have been maintained and changed, I have documented and examined the musical styles preferred by members of three predominantly African American megachurches in metropolitan Los Angeles: First African Methodist Episcopal Church, West Angeles Church of God in Christ, and Faithful Central Bible Church.;Scholars have demonstrated that ethnic identity and the social realities of African Americans are often expressed in their music. As the conditions of Black life in America change, so does the music produced by African Americans, causing stylistic changes to be inevitable. However, there are times when stylistic changes are deliberately adopted to create an ideal environment or familiar atmosphere in a new context. The emergence of African American megachurches in cities across the country over the last thirty years has provided new contexts for African American Christian worship.;Through comparative analysis of the three congregations as well as a case study of the Faithful Central, I have: (1) delineated how Black megachurches are preserving older genres of African American sacred music (i.e. hymns, spirituals, classic gospel), (2) described the musical and non-musical factors that influence the music preferences of congregations, and (3) described the degree(s) to which some large urban congregations are adapting praise and worship to overcome the challenges to interactive and intimate worship.;To place these churches within the context of the historic Black Church tradition, I present information on African American sacred music, the gospel music community of Los |

‘Can-Do!’ Christianity $9.32 Circumstances can sometimes seem to crush even the most mature of Christians. So how do we develop faith in God’s ability to see us through? ‘Can-Do!’ Christianity is a word-by-word study of Philippians 4:13 in which the much-tested Apostle Paul states that he can do anything through his source of strength, Jesus Christ. This book makes a tangible connection between God’s Word and His work in the Christian’s life. A liberal sprinkling of anecdotes, illustrations and quotes keep it interesting, upbeat and an easy read that fits well with today’s busy lifestyles.Debi Derrick has taken the truths about how to live the Christian life and reduced them to simple, but profound rules for living. Following the instructions that you’ll find in this book will surely help you, as it has helped me, to live out the Christian faith. I strongly recommend this book for your reading.Tony Campolo, Ph.D.Professor Emeritus Eastern University St. Davids, PA 19087A professional communicator and avid student of the Bible, Debi Derrick is also a lover of good stories, especially the ones that make us laugh or feel like tomorrow will definitely be a better day. She calls herself a triple PK because of the many family members involved in ministry. And although she accepted Christ at an early age, she certainly has not been insulated from experiencing the traumas of life. She does, however, draw on these when presenting practical, down-to-earth views of God’s place in a Christian’s life. Debi lives in Texas where she is active in her church and community. |

Free updates online. Not illustrated. Excerpt: The Age of Reason; Being an Investigation of True and Fabulous Theology is a deistic pamphlet, written by eighteenth-century British radical and American revolutionary Thomas Paine, that criticizes institutionalized religion and challenges the legitimacy of the Bible. Published in three parts in 1794, 1795, and 1807, it was a bestseller in America, where it caused a short-lived deistic revival. British audiences, however, fearing increased political radicalism as a result of the French Revolution, received it with more hostility. The Age of Reason presents common deistic arguments; for example, it highlights what Paine saw as corruption of the Christian Church and criticizes its efforts to acquire political power. Paine advocates reason in the place of revelation, leading him to reject miracles and to view the Bible as an ordinary piece of literature rather than as a divinely inspired text. It promotes natural religion and argues for a creator-God. Most of Paine’s arguments had long been available to the educated elite, but by presenting them in an engaging and irreverent style, he made deism appealing and accessible to a mass audience. The book was also inexpensive, putting it within the reach of a large number of buyers. Fearing the spread of what they viewed as potentially revolutionary ideas, the British government prosecuted printers and booksellers who tried to publish and distribute it. Paine nevertheless inspired and guided many British freethinkers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and his influence and spirit endures in the works of contemporary |

75 Years In The Wilderness $4.49 A retired high school teacher, Geraldean McMillin now lives in Jefferson City, Missouri, having moved there in 1956 after the death of her husband. She attended Lincoln University from 1962 to 1970, receiving a BS degree in secondary education and an MA in history. She began her teaching career and first taught history, government, and sociology, after which she taught economics for 16 years. Retiring in 1992, she has traveled to Antarctica once and multiple times to every other continent. In 1999 she authored a book, Wrestling with Life: The Wisdom and Wit of a Woman Wrestler, about her grandmother, a professional wrestler in the 1920s and 1930s. Currently she is beginning to study the sciences to fill a neglected gap in her education. She is the mother of three, a grandmother of six, and a great-grandmother of three. McMillin grew up in the Missouri Ozarks during the Great Depression. Her family was very poor, and life was difficult. Until she started school at age four, she had no books to read, not even the Bible. But her memories are not about being poor; they are about the abundance of love that was ever-present in her family. Despite the fact that religion was unimportant to her parents, they never objected when McMillin began her lifelong search to understand God. That quest led to the writing of 75 Years in the Wilderness: A Christian Agnostic’s Search for Answers. 75 Years in the Wilderness: A Christian Agnostic’s Search for Answers, written from a Christian perspective, is about a doubter’s passionate search for absolutes that begins in early childhood. McMillin, born into a non-religious family and wanting to know why God allows pain, turns to churchesfor answers, but finds only contentious diversity. Needing to broaden her search, she begins studying canonical as well as non-canonical Hebrew and Christian writings and adding history for context. Reading many kinds of secular and religious literature, conversing with people of many |

A Believable Bible $26.61 In a recent study reported by the Associated Press, the American Religious Identification Survey concluded that, the percentage of Christians in America had declined. It went on further to report that more people say that they have no religion at all. Approximately 30o% of married couples did not have a religious ceremony. About 27% of those polled said that they did not want a religious funeral. Why is this true? Increasingly, people feel the need to make a decision. They must decide between, accepting and becoming a Biblical literalist or, embracing the known, verifiable realities about the world in which they live. This choice is confusing, and it creates a state of cognitive dissonance that becomes intolerable for most people.Having to accept a Bible that is unbelievable, that is filled with pre-modern, unacceptable notions, and even noxious declarations, is a turnoff to people in an educated culture. Having to believe in an indefinable, punitive, and capricious God as promoted in religion, is a difficult and repulsive pill for most people to swallow. In “A Believable Bible” you are provided with a guidebook for understanding and making sense of the book of faith that is the basic document of, and that is responsible for the Christian faith in America. You will be surprised to discover that the Bible may not be what you have been led to believe. Incorporating the best of recent biblical scholarship and psychological insight, Dr. Kania takes you on a fascinating journey of discovery and new truth, much as he did in his prior book, “Healthy Religion.” |

A Better Understanding (Vol. 2) $20.05 The information that I have presented in these writings is possibly controversial to the belief of others. In my search for Bible truth I have derived from others many of the conclusions found within these Biblical subjects. With each subject I have insisted on positive proof by finding supporting scriptures that prove their meaning. By doing extensive search of the scriptures I believe the things written here are closer to Bible truth than what others have found. I was prompted to get a better understanding of the scriptures by the fact that there are so many different beliefs being taught in the Christian churches. I have tried to keep an open mind about those things that I have heard from the many ministers of the churches that I have attended. I have always been with the idea that if one just accepts what you are being told in these churches, there is a danger, because you are putting your salvation in another’s hands. I have come to believe there are many false ideas being taught by those ministers of the Christian belief. I believe those ministers are sincere with their teaching, but I also believe they in many ways have it wrong. I have considered the old saying “if you are being led by a blind man, and he falls into the ditch, you also will fall into that ditch.” I feel strongly that each one of us is responsible for our own salvation by hopefully getting it right. The things I have written are my opinion and one must decide upon reading if it agrees with your understanding. For many years I have done extensive study of the scriptures, and believe I have found a more truthful understanding of those scriptures. I believe in what I have found so strongly that I feel I must tell others. |
