What do you mean by Christian way? First of all, there is nothing in Islam that prohibits you from marrying a Christian or Jew. You need to discuss all matters prior to marriage and make sure they are in the contract. For example, the children should be raised Muslim, make sure she knows this and agrees to this. Make sure she knows her rights and don’t deny them to her just because she is not a Muslim.
Do it the Islamic way. Make sure you are not alone before the marriage, have the witnesses, etc.
You would be the head of the household so have an Islamic wedding and do everything according to Islam. If she accepts this then go for it, if not, then you will know you have wasted the time.
When you propose it is called engagement. It isn’t a wedding. That comes later, when the contract is signed and you have a party (the wedding party). Just make sure to stay away from anything haram.
If it doesn’t work, you can break off the engagement. If you married by then, then you just get a divorce.
@ I love Allah, do you know it is not haram for a man to marry one of the people of the book? It is haram for a woman, but not a man. Allah permits it as long as she has piety and the like. Everything a Muslim man would look for in a wife, she needs to have. The Prophet married people of the book and it was never forbidden for us to do so. The ayah you are quoting is regarding pagans, atheists and the like.
To all those trying to say it won’t work. You have no idea, only Allah/God knows this. I know many couples that are like this and it works out fine and other times it doesn’t. You don’t know what the future holds.
To all those claiming Islam does not have engagement. We do, you don’t get married the same day you agree, do you? While it might not be exactly the same as the American custom, we do have a form of engagement.
