120 Christian Poems $12.34 God has done so much for me in my life, and I just wanted to do something to honor and glorify Him. Hopefully these poems will encourage other believers in their walk, just like I have been encouraged many times throughout my life. My deepest desire is to use the talents that God gave me to glorify Jesus the King of Kings. I received inspiration from these poems through studying Scripture, time spent in prayer, and listening to the messages that my pastor delivered several times a week. Depression has played a major role in my life, therefore I realize the importance of believing, trusting, and knowing the gifts that God offers to everyone of us-that of being loved, peace, forgiveness, and salvation. Upon reading this book, I hope people believe in the Gospel of Jesus, and I hope that people will glorify and praise the Lord of Lords and the Host of Hosts, and I hope that God will use this and people will be saved. |

1272 Establishments: Order of Penitents, Turnov, University of Murcia, Nishi Honganji $14.14 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: The Christian movement known as the Penitents goes back to the 4 century. Those who had committed serious sins confessed their sins to the bishop or his representative and were assigned a penance that was to be carried out over a period of time. After completing their penance, they were reconciled by the bishop with a prayer of absolution offered in the midst of the community. Penance assumed many forms, such as pilgrimages to holy sites; constructing, repairing and rebuilding churches; and caring for the poor and sick. During the time they worked out their penances, the penitents often had special places in church and wore special garments to indicate their status. Like the catechumens who were preparing for baptism, they were often dismissed from the Sunday assembly after the Liturgy of the Word. The use of ashes at the beginning of Lent is an extension of the use of ashes with those entering the Order of Penitents. Penance, in the Judeo-Christian sense can be traced to the time just after the Jewish exile in Babylon (Sirach 5:1-8; 34: 21-31). The repentance and conversion preached by John the Baptist was of this type. In the first centuries of the Christian Church, groups of penitents were established by the Church for those Christians who fell into grave sin and sought reconciliation with the Church. These sins included such things as adultery, murder, idolatry and magic, and theft. Doing penance was a visible sign of conversion. If the sinner refused to do penance, he or she was excommunicated. Public penance consisted of acts of mortification such as wearing a “hair shirt,” covering the head with ashes, fasting and prayers. These acts were regulated by the bishops. After the period of penance was completed, the repentant sinner was rea… More: |

15 Days of Prayer with Johannes Tauler $1.99 “15 Days of Prayer” CollectionNow distributed by New City Press, this popular series is perfect for those looking for an introduction to a particular spiritual guide, those searching for gift ideas and those who merely wish to know more about the person and his or her spirituality. Additional volume planned in 2 to 3 months intervals. Each volume contains:• A brief biography of the saint or spiritual leader introduced in that volume• A guide to creating a format for prayer and retreat• 15 meditation sessions with focus points and reflection guidesFollow in the footsteps of Johannes TaulerJohannes Tauler (c. 1300—1361), one of the great Rhineland mystics, was born to a prosperous and apparently religious family, both he and his sister entering religious orders at a young age. He began his Dominican novitiate in 1314 and spent several years studying logic, philosophy and theology before his ordination to the priesthood, after which he dedicated his life to the spiritual direction of Dominican nuns and the laity and above all to preaching. Under the influence of Meister Eckhart, Tauler developed a mystical approach to Christian spirituality rooted in the concept of God’s “birth” and continuing presence in the human soul.Make room for GodJohannes Tauler invites us to prepare the “ground of the soul” to receive God, so that the Word of God may be born in us as it is in Mary. Focusing on themes such as God in Creation and the return of all things to God, Tauler nevertheless insists that the union of the human soul with God is by grace and not by nature. Through prayer, we surrender our own striving and open our hearts to God’s purposes: this is not abandonment of moral purpose, however, but detachment and openness to the movements of the Holy Spirit. A 15-day retreat with Johannes Tauler, then, offers true depth to the soul that welcomes God. |

Excerpt: The 150s decade ran from January 1, 150, to December 31, 159.Events and trends Significant people A hyperlinked version of this chapter is at The First Apology was an early work of Christian apologetics addressed by Justin Martyr to the Roman Emperor Antoninus Pius . It is dated to the period 150-155.Purpose for writing The purpose of the Apology is to prove to the emperors, renowned as upright and philosophical men, the importance of Christianity. Chapters i.-xii. give the preliminary negative proof; chap. xiii. begins a positive exposition of Christianity: that Christians are the true worshipers of God, the Creator of all things; they offer him the only sacrifices worthy of him, those of prayer and thanksgiving, and are taught by his Son, to whom they assign a place next in honor to him; this teaching leads them to perfect morality, as shown in their teacher’s words and their own lives, and founded on their belief in the resurrection.Dating of the text The Dialogue is a later work than the First Apology ; the date of composition of the latter, from the fact that it was addressed to Antoninus Pius , Marcus Aurelius , and Lucius Verus , must fall between 147 and 161. The reference to Felix as governor of Egypt, since this can only be the Lucius Munatius Felix whom the Oxyrhynchus papyri name as prefect September 13, 151, fixes the date still more exactly. The Chronicon of Eusebius gives 152-153 as the date of the attacks of Crescens . What is designated as the Second Apology was written as a supplement to the first, on account of certain proceedings which had in the mean time taken place in Rome before Lollius Urbicus as prefect of the city, which must have been between 150 and 157.Doctrine of the Logos The doctrine of the Logos begotten of flesh is specially emphasized. |

And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.Genesis 1:1 in other translations The Authorized King James Version is an English translation of the Christian Holy Bible begun in 1604 and completed in 1611 by the Church of England. Printed by the King’s Printer, Robert Barker, the first edition included schedules unique to the Church of England; for example, a lectionary for morning and evening prayer. This was the third such official translation into English; the first having been the Great Bible commissioned by the Church of England in the reign of King Henry VIII, and the second having been the Bishop’s Bible of 1568. In January 1604, King James I of England convened the Hampton Court Conference where a new English version was conceived |

It was first published between 1588 and 1607 as a response to the Lutheran Historia Ecclesiae Christi (History of the Church of Christ) in which the Magdeburg theologians surveyed the history of the church in order to demonstrate how the Catholic Church represented the Antichrist and had deviated from the beliefs and practices of the early church .Significance Long before Baronius was appointed Librarian of the Vatican in 1597, he had access to material and sources in its archives that were previously unpublished or unused. He utilised these in the development of his work. Accordingly, Annales Ecclesiastici is considered by most as |
