Open Block: Christian De Portzamparc $48.12 The Open Block concept and its corollary luminous and diversified ‘open street’, as realised by Christian de Portzamparc in the 80s. is based on a set of flexible rules that allow for variations. Buildings are independent and set apart, but allow for the street to open onto the internal side of the open blocks where gardens are planted. All buildings’ sides benefit from an exposure to fresh air an… |

Immaterial World $45 Today the excitement in architecture derives from the tension between the need for privacy and the impulse toward community. This unique survey of buildings and interiors captures the multilayered experience that is engaged whenever we look out of–or into–a work of architecture. Immaterial World examines the built environment as a reflection of the terrors and pleasures of exposure, information overload, and abundance of every sort. Twenty-five projects from around the world by such well-known architects as Diller Scofidio + Renfro, Morphosis, Christian de Portzamparc, Renzo Piano, and many others, are presented. These works range from complete transparency to bunkerlike opacity, depending upon who”s doing the looking and who or what is being seen. |

La Villette 1971-1995 $21.94 The derelict slaughterhouse of La Villette, located in the then notoriously rough northern Paris, became the unlikely focal point of every major architecture firm in the world when in 1971, the Paris city council decided to finance a major makeover. Recalling the genesis of one of the most ambitious architectural and social challenges in recent history, this book features exclusive interviews with the likes of Christian de Portzamparc and Rem Koolhaas, and offers numerous illustrations. It will please architecture lovers, but also appeal to socially-conscious readers interested in learning how a slum became a major cultural venue. A brilliant and unusual essay about architecture at its best, it is also a powerful political statement unafraid to tackle the burning issue of urban wastelands and how to give them a revitalized future. |

Paris 2000+: New Architecture $10.98 In every era, Paris had epitomized beauty and innovation in architecture—magnificent Gothic cathedrals, elegant hotels and chateaux of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the broad sweep of Haussmann in the 1870s, and most recently the Grand Projets of Francois Mitterand.Paris 2000+ focuses on the exceptional projects built in the French capital since 2000. Works by French masters like Jean Nouvel and Christian de Portzamparc and international building firms such as Renzo Piano Building Workshop, Herzog and de Meuron, and UN Studio are featured alongside projects by emerging French practices to create a lively presentation of the best contemporary projects. Author Sam Lubell has selected thirty buildings to convey the energy and creativity of architects working in Paris and its environs. Among them are the controversial Musee du Quai Branly, the glamorous Louis Vuitton flagship store on the Champs-Elysees, the restoration of the historic Publicis Drugstore, also on the Champs-Elysees, a graceful pedestrian bridge across the Seine, a new Metro strop, and an experimental house in the Parc de la Villette. |

People From Etterbeek: Herg $10.09 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Georges Prosper Remi (22 May 1907 3 March 1983), better known by the pen name Hergé, was a Belgian comics writer and artist. “Hergé” is the French pronunciation of “RG”, his initials reversed. His best known and most substantial work is The Adventures of Tintin comic book series, which he wrote and illustrated from 1929 until his death in 1983, leaving the twenty-fourth Tintin adventure Tintin and Alph-Art unfinished. His work remains a strong influence on comics, particularly in Europe. He was inducted into the Comic Book Hall of Fame in 2003. The notable qualities of the Tintin stories include their vivid humanism, a realistic feel produced by meticulous and wide ranging research, and Hergé’s ligne claire drawing style. Adult readers enjoy the many satirical references to the history and politics of the 20th century. The Blue Lotus, for example, was inspired by the Mukden incident that led to the Chinese-Japanese War of 1934. King Ottokar’s Sceptre could be read against the background of Hitler’s Anschluss or in the context of the struggle between the Romanian Iron Guard and the King of Romania, Carol II; whilst later albums such as The Calculus Affair depict the Cold War. Hergé has become one of the most famous Belgians worldwide and Tintin is still an international success. Hergé’s work was heavily influenced by his involvement since his youth with Scouting. The long-awaited Hergé Museum was opened in Louvain-La-Neuve on June 2, 2009. Designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Christian de Portzamparc, the museum reflects Hergé’s huge corpus of work which has, until now, been sitting in studios and bank vaults. Georges Prosper Remi was born in 1907 in Etterbeek, in Brussels Belgium to middle class parents, Alexis Remi |

Writing and Seeing Architecture $54.53 The creative forms of literature and architecture appear to be distinct, one constructing a world on the page, the other producing the world in which we live. It is a conscious act to read literature, but the effects of architecture can pass by unnoticed. Yet, despite such obvious differences, writers and architects share a dynamic with their readers and visitors that is unpredictably similar. Writing and Seeing Architecture unveils a candid conversation between Christian de Portzamparc, celebrated French architect, and influential theorist Philippe Sollers that challenges us to see the analogous nature of writing and architecture. Their fascinating discussion offers a renewal of visionary architectural thinking by invoking past literary ideals that sought to liberate society through the reinvention of writing itself. Urging that new rules be set for each creation rather than resorting to limitations of the capitalist society, the authors’ daring confrontation of the interactions between writing and designing a space forcefully demonstrates the importance of intellectuals and practitioners intervening in the public sphere. Christian de Portzamparc is an architect whose designs include the French Embassy in Germany, the Cité de la Musique in Paris, and the LVMH Tower in New York City.He was winner of the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 1994. Philippe Sollers is a novelist and critic whose journal Tel Quel(1960–1982) published Jacques Derrida, Michel Foucault, and Bernard-Henri Lévy. He is the author of many books, including The Parkand Une Vie Divine. Catherine Tihanyi’s translations include One Must Also Be Hungarian by Adam Biro and The Story of Lynx by Claude Lévi-Strauss. Deborah Hauptmann is associate professor of architecture theory at Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands. |
