The uncompromising Irish artist, spiritualist, and provocateur gives a twist to the critical truism that double albums would generally be stronger if edited into a single disc. With what she terms her “attempt to create a place of peace in a time of war,” Sinéad O’Connor consciously risks charges of not merely padding but redundancy, as the two discs feature practically the same set of material …

A GRAND TOUR OF ASIA recreates a time and a place that no longer exists except in the lyrical images so lovingly preserved by the lens of a wandering American, and so wryly captured in the prose of his mysterious companions nearly a century ago. Christian Rub, a character actor in Hollywood films, presented the intriguing album to its current owner, Hania Tallmadge, in 1949, when she was a child.A historically unique collection of photographs taken in the spring of 1910 on a four-month tour of the Far East, presented in an exquisite facsimile edition of the album in which they were originally discovered.Includes more than 150 images reproduced in their actual size, their hand-tinted colors authentic and un-retouched. Even the handwritten script has been carefully replicated.Who was the amateur shutterbug with the refined sense of composition? Who were his three stalwart companions? In particular, who was the album’s unnamed commentator?A GRAND TOUR OF ASIA is a unique gift for lovers of photography, travel, history, and mystery, and for collectors of antiques and Asian art.Reviews”It’¬?s a charming and revealing document of West meeting East.” -San Francisco Chronicle

Photography is a revolutionary art medium that has changed the way in which the world is presented. It has become an indispensable mode of communication and a vital means of revealing and explaining the world. This comprehensive encyclopedia traces the amazing journey of photography, from the invention of the daguerreotype in 1829 to the digital photograph of today. Using pictures that have changed our way of looking at the world, such as Eadweard Muybridge’s Galloping Horse, and featuring biographies of 200 of the greatest photographers of all time-from Mathew Brady to Cindy Sherman-the encyclopedia delivers the complex history of photography in a format that will appeal to any reader.Author Bio: Christian Caujolle created the photo agency l’Agence VU in 1986. An old woman with pink skin and suit, lying in a pink coffin; a family saying Grace in a McDonald’s; a little girl in her ballet costume, standing in a windowsill . This first monograph on the rising photographer, Angela Strassheim, whose work was noted at last year’s Whitney Biennial, features a concise selection of recent photographs which center around her born-again Christian family and other domestic narratives inspired by her odd childhood and even more unusual adult life. (Strassheim received her MFA in photography from Yale University in 2003, but she is also a certified forensic and biomedical photographer who has worked as a crime-scene and autopsy photographer in Miami, New York and Richmond, Virginia.) As essayist Jean Dykstra writes, Strassheim’s photographs are characterized by a steady, unwavering gaze, which can be as unexpectedly intimate as it is unnerving. They are so carefully observed, and so fantastically inconclusive, that they keep us looking too.

Poetry. Photography. Performance. BODY OF TEXT is a collection of concrete poems made by marrying poetry with body-based performance art and documentary photography. Dressed in a full black body-suit, Michael V. Smith is photographed by David Ellingsen in hundreds of poses which resemble Greco-Roman letters, Asian characters, hieroglyphs, or Rorschach inkblots. These are then arranged in book form, to a maximum of three images per page. In the same spirit of moving beyond language as heard in the sound poetry of Christian Bok the poems in BODY OF TEXT occupy a liminal space between poetry and visual art. The body is made word, is made site, object and subject. The body is symbol.

 Christian Marclay

Christian Marclay

$29.95

Christian Marclay is known for using a range of media–video, sculpture, installation and performance–in his artwork to address the ways that music and sound impact our experience of the world. While he frequently uses photograms and found images in his work, most people don’t realize the extent to which photography has become a tool of choice for this subtle but influential artist. For this project, a limited-edition boxed card set, Shuffle, Marclay photographed the appearance of musical notation in his everyday wanderings–finding examples on shop awnings, chocolate tins, T-shirts, underwear and other unexpected places. This body of work reveals Marclay to be an obsessive photographic note-taker with a flair for uncovering musical clues hidden in the landscape and adorning our world–musical notes just waiting to be called into action. Each of the 75 images collected here is presented on an oversized playing card, and the entire deck is enclosed in a distinctive package. Part Fluxus box, part John Cage-ian chance operation or Eames House of Cards, this highly collectible edition offers a compelling, serendipity-driven visual experience, as well as the components for a spontaneous musical score: a player need only shuffle the deck and let the cards fall where they may in order to produce a unique, experimental sequence. With text and instructions by Marclay.

 Conversations with Ann Beattie

Conversations with Ann Beattie

$5.9

Ann Beattie (b. 1947) published both her first novel (Chilly Scenes of Winter) and her first short story collection (Secrets and Surprises) in 1976. Her prose features ironic wit and a dry, matter-of-fact tone. Political and familial disillusionment are frequent themes. She is, for many, the ideal representative of American realistic fiction from the 1980s and 1990s. She has often been called a minimalist, the “voice of her generation,” and the “quintessential New Yorker fiction writer.” Conversations with Ann Beattie goes beyond these views to reveal a dynamic writer who plays with aesthetic form, gender stereotypes, and all conventional notions about relationships. In interviews ranging from 1979 to 2004, Beattie discusses her evolving craft, resists the labels placed on her, and articulates her vision of contemporary life. She frequently notes the connection between her prose style and methods of photography, commenting that she intends for her stories and novels to capture scenes and small slices of life rather than broad overviews. By turns sharp, funny, and loquacious, Beattie comes across as a writer very different from her frequently reticent characters who have great difficulty communicating. This collection includes interviews from such publications as the New York Times and the Christian Science Monitor, as well as a new interview conducted by the volume’s editor. Dawn Trouard is a professor of English at the University of Central Florida. She is the author, with Edwin T. Arnold, of Reading Faulkner: Sanctuary (University Press of Mississippi) and editor of Eudora Welty: Eye of the Storyteller.

Chapters: Photography in Denmark, Dansk Fotografisk Forening, Brandts Museum of Photographic Art, Fotografisk Center, National Danish Museum of Photography, Fogtdal Photographers Award. Excerpt: Photography in Denmark has developed from strong participation and interest in the very beginnings of the art in 1839 to the success of a considerable number of Danes in the world of photography today. Pioneers such as Mads Alstrup and Georg Emil Hansen paved the way for a rapidly growing profession during the last half of the 19th century while both artistic and press photographers have made internationally recognized contributions. Although Denmark was slow to accept photography as an art form, Danish photographers are now increasingly active, participating in key exhibitions around the world. Among Denmark’s most successful contemporary photographers are Jacob Aue Sobol who gained recognition for captivating portraits of his Greenlandic girlfirend and Per Bak Jensen who introduced a new perspective to modern landscape photography. Press photography has prospered too under award-winning contributors such as Jan Grarup and Claus Bjørn Larsen who have covered wars and conflicts of global importance over the past 20 years. Frederik Ferdinand Petersen: Daguerreotype of Hans Christian Andersen (1847)Christian Tuxen Falbe, a Danish marine officer, was in Paris in January 1839 on behalf of Crown Prince Frederik when Louis Daguerre revealed the art of daguerreotyping. Falbe informed the Crown Prince of a visit to Daguerre where he had seen some of the very earliest daguerreotypes, explaining how impressed he had been by the new process and how important he thought it would be for art and science in Denmark. Shortly afterwards, he returned to Copenhagen with a came… More:
