Shadow Living… Paintings of Grief $12.95 “Grief is a universal phenomenon. Possibly every minute, every hour even every day of the year, someone is grieving the loss of a loved one. It can be the death of a spouse, a daughter, a son, a sister or a brother, even a grandparent, or a friend no matter what the relationship, no matter how close or how distant, grief rears its ugly head with merciless, menacing pain and with piercing precision. Sooner or later, grief tears through the clutches of time and leaves the griever saddled with the deafening silence of losing a loved one to death. Shadow Living…Paintings of Grief continues where author, Deborah Slappey Pitts paused in her debut book, I Feel Okay (May 2005), where she superbly describes her family’s desperate attempt to find a physician who would help her husband, the late Clyde Slappey find a cure for the menacing primary amyloidosis disease. Pitts and Clyde made it to the Mayo Clinic, their place of hope, but sadly, Clyde dies within two weeks of receiving a life-saving heart transplant. Now in the enthralling sequel to I Feel Okay, Shadow Living…Paintings of Grief, Pitts shares her intimate story of pain and despair as she reaches through the darkest crevices of her shadowy world of grief, holding onto God s unchanging hand. Pitts describes how she grapples between two worlds her new reality of living in a world without her husband and a faux reality where she tries desperately to hold onto precious memories as husband and wife. Pitts prays earnestly to God to bring herhusband back to her and the children. But deep inside, Pitts knows her husband won t be coming back. Out of the depths of her agonizing despair of becoming a widow at age 40, Pitts makes a heartfeltfight to live again in a new world without the sunshine of her life. Her story is very powerful in content. The reader is consumed into Pitts shadowy world of grieving and empathizes with her anguish and despair through every intricate word. Pitts story of survival is for survivors around the world and her story instantly connects with readers as they witness her brave fight with grief. Pitts describes grief as a super ficialentity that takes a life of its own through suffering and pain. She instantly connects with her reader, capturing their heart while she meticulously describes the perplexing stages of grieving that she experiences during her first year living as a widow. Pitts recounts her pain-filled days and nights of crying out in the darkness, praying anxiously for God to console and protect her and her children. With God as her refuge and strength, Pitts emerges from the shadows of grief to a life of renewed hope. Now her mission is to serve as a beacon of light and inspiration of hope and healing to others. It’s a must read an unforgettable story; It s a must read an unforgettable story;written with candor, soul, and love.” |

The Color of Light: Poems on Van Gogh’s Late Paintings $20 “The great Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh comes to life in a new light on the pages of this splendid volume. Through eloquent poetic meditations on Van Gogh’s late paintings, Marilyn Chandler McEntyre shows how these artworks testify to divine presence, and she invites readers to find their way through form, color, and light into a new awareness of the Spirit. >Some of McEntyre’s poems remind us of the sorrows in the life of this solitary artist and of his infinite longing. Some convey Van Gogh’s epiphanies of joy and energy that he expressed in color. According to McEntyre, these paintings invite us to see things in a different light, and her poetry is an act of consent to that invitation, providing an intimate encounter with these great works. >Evocatively pairing art and poetry, The Color of Light is the third of McEntyre’s poetry books on Dutch master painters. This volume, like the other two, moves us to reflect not only on the artist’s life and faith but also on our own.” |

The Christian Vision of God $15 “Gloriously illuminated by a series of fine art paintings, The Christian Vision of God is an ideal introduction to what Christians believe about the Trinity. Alister McGrath seeks to engage both the mind and the imagination as he focuses on the astounding, life-transforming truth that God wants to be known by us. Astute and informed, McGrath also models an earnest religious quest for the divine meaning and human import of Christian convictions as reflected in their development and in the artistic and literary treasures of the broader culture. Poetry, prayer, and theological reflection are interwoven with commentary on the ideas conveyed through works such as Daniel Bonnell’s Pearl of Great Price, Klimt’s The Kiss, Rembrandt’s The Storm on the Sea of Galilee, Morazzone’s Pentecost, William Blake’s Moses and the Burning Bush, Botticelli’s Holy Trinity and Rublev’s Icon with the Trinity.” |

1508 Works: 1508 Architecture, 1508 Paintings, 1508 Plays, the Deposition, St Mary Magdalene, Taunton, San Rocco, Venice, Bovo-Bukh $14.14 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: The Bovo-Bukh (“Bovo book”; also known as Baba Buch , etc.), written in 15071508 by Elia Levita , was the most popular chivalric romance in the Yiddish language . It was first printed in 1541, being the first non-religious book to be printed in Yiddish. For five centuries, it endured at least 40 editions. It is written in ottava rima and, according to Sol Liptzin, is “generally regarded as the most outstanding poetic work in Old Yiddish”. The theme derives from the Anglo-Norman romance of Sir Bevis of Hampton , by way of an Italian poem that had modified the name Bevis of Hampton to Buovo d’Antona and had, itself, been through at least thirty editions at the time of translation and adaptation into Yiddish. The central theme is the love of Bovo and Druziane. , The story “had no basis in Jewish reality”, but compared to other chivalric romances it “tone down the Christian symbols of his original” and “substitute Jewish customs, Jewish values and Jewish traits of character here and there…” The character was also popular in Russian folk culture as Prince Bova .The Bovo-Bukh later became known in the late 18th century as the Bove-mayse or “Bovo’s tale”. This name, in turn, was corrupted and passed into the Yiddish language as bubbe meise , literally “grandmother’s tale”, meaning “old wives’ tale”. Plot summary Based on Sol Liptzin , A History of Yiddish Literature , pp. 6-7.Bovo’s young mother conspires to have her husband, an aged king, killed during a hunt, then marries the murderer. They try and fail to poison the child Bovo, whom they are afraid will avenge his father. The handsome youth runs away from Antona, is kidnapped and taken to Flanders to be stable boy to a king, whose daughter Druzane falls in love with him.The heathen sultan of Babylonia arrives, backed by ten |

Excerpt: The Augsburg Confession , also known as the “Augustana” from its Latin name, Confessio Augustana, is the primary confession of faith of the Lutheran Church and one of the most important documents of the Lutheran reformation . The Augsburg Confession was written in both German and Latin , and was presented by a number of German rulers and free-cities at the Diet of Augsburg on June 25, 1530. The Holy Roman Emperor Charles V had called on the Princes and Free Territories in Germany to explain their religious convictions in an attempt to restore religious and political unity in the Holy Roman Empire, and rally support against the Turkish invasion. It is the fourth document contained in the Lutheran Book of Concord .Background Diet of Augsburg by Christian Beyer. On January 21, 1530, the Emperor Charles V issued letters from Bologna , inviting the German diet to meet in Augsburg April 8, for the purpose of discussing and deciding various important questions. Although the writ of invitation was couched in very peaceful language, it was received with suspicion by some of the Evangelicals. The far-seeing Landgrave of Hesse hesitated to attend the diet, but the Elector John of Saxony , who received the writ March 11, on March 14 directed Martin Luther , Justus Jonas , Johannes Bugenhagen , and Philipp Melanchthon to meet in Torgau , where he was, and present a summary of the Lutheran faith, to be laid before the emperor at the diet. This summary has received the name of the “Torgau Articles”. On April 3 the elector and reformers started from Torgau and reached Coburg on April 23. There Luther was left behind because he was an outlaw according to the Diet of Worms . The rest reached Augsburg May 2. On the journey Melanchthon worked on an “apology”, using the Torgau articles, and sent |

Excerpt: The Declaration of Sports (also known as the Book of Sports ) was a declaration of James I of England issued in 1617 listing the sports that were permitted on Sundays and other holy days . It was originally issued in consultation with Thomas Morton , bishop of Chester , to resolve a dispute in Lancashire between the Puritans and the gentry (many of whom were Roman Catholics ). The initial declaration was just for Lancashire , but in 1618, James made the declaration national. The 1618 declaration has largely the same main text as the 1617 version, but with an additional paragraph at the beginning explaining that the king has decided to make the declaration applicable to the whole of England. The declaration listed archery , dancing , “leaping, vaulting, or any other such harmless recreation” as permissible sports, together with “May-games, Whitsun-ales and Morris-dances , and the setting up of May-poles “. Also allowed: “women shall have leave to carry rushes to the church for the decorating of it, according to their old custom.”Amongst the activities that were prohibited were bear- and bull-baiting , “interludes ” and bowling .On the one hand, the declaration rebuked Puritans and other “precise persons”, and was issued to counteract the growing Puritan calls for strict abstinence on the Christian Sabbath (Sabbatarianism ). On the other, it condemned Catholics and others who did not attend church services in their parish , as the declaration specified that only people who had first attended divine service were entitled to participate in recreations afterward. The declaration was reissued by Charles I on 18 October 1633, as The King’s Majesty’s declaration to his subjects concerning lawful sports to be used . It was claimed by William Prynne that the new declaration was written |

Angelic Verses $27.17 This is an account of the biblical story as witnessed through the actions of angels. All of the appearances of angels in both Testaments of the Christian Bible have beenlisted with brief but insightful comments to give context to the biblical quotationswhere necessary.
