Chapters: Bollhuset, Old Swinford Hospital, Kingston, New York, Val-De-Grâce, Clarendon House, Lejonkulan, San Gennaro Dei Poveri. Excerpt: Bollhuset , also called by the names Stora Bollhuset , Bollhusteatern , and Lejonkulan over the centuries, was the name of the first theater of Stockholm , Sweden; it was the first Swedish theater and the first real theater building in Scandinavia . The name “Bollhuset” means “The Ball House”, and it was originally built in 1627 for ball sports and used in this way for forty years. The name Lejonkulan , however, was in fact the name for a different building, which were also used by the same theater in the 17th century. The building of Bollhuset represents a long row of the most important events of the history of theatre in the city and country. Between 1667 and 1792 it was used as a theater until it was torn down in 1793; between 1737 and 1754, the first national theatre was located here, in 1773-1782 the Royal Swedish Opera (and thereby the Royal Swedish Ballet ) was located here, in 1783-1792 the French theatre of Stockholm was housed here, in 1787 the second national theater was re-founded in the building, and from 1788 it was the home of the Royal Dramatic Theatre .History The building was located on Slottsbacken near the Royal palace Tre Kronor . It was described as a large, but simple rectangular building of white bricks with a hip roof . During the 17th century, foreign travelling theater companies often visited Stockholm, especially from Germany and the Netherlands, but they performed in temporary locals; the German theater troop of Christian Theun l. Thum (or Thaumb) performed in the city from 1628 to 1655, but it is not known if they ever performed in Bollhuset. An English troupe, the troupe of Joris Jollifoot, played in the city |

Chapters: Democracy: an American Novel, Apology of Al-Kindy, Duden, the Peterkin Papers, 1880 in Literature, a Blighted Life, Life of William Blake, a Tramp Abroad, the Purcell Papers, Les Soirées de Médan, the Trumpet-Major, the Enemies of Books, the Power of Movement in Plants, Biographical Sketches of Joseph Smith the Prophet, and His Progenitors for Many Generations, by Lucy Smith, Mother of the Prophet. Source: Wikipedia. Free updates online. Not illustrated. Excerpt: Democracy: An American Novel is a political novel written by Henry Brooks Adams and published anonymously in 1880. Only after the writer’s death in 1918 did his publisher reveal Adams’s authorship although, upon publication, the novel had immediately become popular. In January 2005, the Washington National Opera premiered Democracy: An American Comedy, an opera by Scott Wheeler and Romulus Linney based upon Henry Adams’ book. Democracy is a novel about political power, its acquisition, use and abuse. It is set at the beginning of a new administration, with the election campaign just over and the new President of the United States just having been elected. However, all the characters depicted are entirely fictitious. The new president’s Christian name is Jacob, while his full name is never revealed. In a 1961 foreword to the novel, Henry D. Aiken states that the U.S. president of the novel “bears some resemblance to Andrew Johnson, to Garfield, and to Grant”. Dates are never mentioned either, but internal evidence (at one point a 25-year-old woman says that she was “almost an infant” during the Civil War) suggests it is set in the late 1870s. Madeleine Lee, the daughter of an eminent clergyman, is a woman of independent means. Now a 30-year-old widow from New York who, five years ago and in quick succession, lost her |

21st Century Breakdown(Bonus Tracks) $52.98 Green Day’s long-awaited eighth studio album, entitled 21st Century Breakdown, has finally arrived. The album is the best-selling trio’s first studio album since 2004′s two-time Grammy Award-winning punk-rock opera American Idiot, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard chart, spawned five hit singles, and went on to sell more than 12 million copies worldwide.21st Century Breakdown is divided into three acts: Heroes and Cons, Charlatans and Saints, and Horseshoes and Handgrenades, and follows a young couple, Christian and Gloria, through the mess and promise of the century so far. Songs include Know Your Enemy, 21 Guns, East Jesus Nowhere, Before the Lobotomy, and Restless Heart Syndrome. In a recent feature, Rolling Stone called the album even more ambitious than American Idiot and a record of die-hard punk ideals…tightly scripted, continually ascending classic-rock excitement. Singer-guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong, bassist Mike Dirnt, and drummer Tre Cool have been at work writing, arranging, and recording 21st Century Breakdown since early 2006 and are currently making finishing touches with producer Butch Vig, who is known for his work with Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Garbage, and many others. |

Assyrian Families: Rosie Malek-Yonan $9.62 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Assyrian Neo-Aramaic Rosie Malek-Yonan (Assyrian: ; Persian: ) (born July 4, 1965) is an Assyrian actress, artist, director, author and human rights activist. Born in Tehran, Iran, Rosie Malek-Yonan is a descendant of one of the oldest and most prominent Assyrian families, tracing her Assyrian roots back nearly eleven centuries. The Malek family or tribe came from the Assyrian village of Geogtapah, Urmi (also known as Urmia), a region in northwestern Iran. Geogtapa was the largest Assyrian Christian village in the region and much of it belonged to the Malek-Yonan family with the oldest plot in the family graveyard dating back to 1,100 CE. In the 17th century, Geogtapah became the setting for the famous tragic love story of Aslee from the House of Malek and Karam, a commoner. The tale has been recounted in numerous Assyrian and Russian books. The Aslee and Karam Opera was composed in 1912 by the Azerbaijani composer Uzeyir Hajibeyov. This tragic love story has been compared to that of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. A beautiful stone well was erected in the village of Geogtapah in Aslee’s memory after her heartrending and untimely death. Rosie’s father, George Malek-Yonan (born 1924), an international attorney in Iran, was personally responsible for negotiating and procuring a seat for the Assyrians as a recognized Christian minority in the Iranian Parliament or Majlis of Iran. This was a huge accomplishment for a people who had been without a formal country since the fall of the Assyrian Empire. He also held the title of Champion of Champions in Iran for three years. Rosie’s mother, Lida Malek-Yonan (1928 2002) regarded as an activist and humanitarian, was equally influential in demanding recognition for Assyrian women in Iran by launching a… More: |

Buildings and Structures in Denmark: Architecture of Denmark $10.28 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Chapters: Architecture of Denmark, List of Tallest Structures in Denmark, Little Belt Overhead Powerline Crossings, Frederiksdal Pavilion. Excerpt: The architecture of Denmark has its origins in the Viking period, richly revealed by archaeological finds. It became firmly established in the Middle Ages when first Romanesque , then Gothic churches and cathedrals sprang up throughout the country. It was during this period that, in a country with little access to stone, brick became the construction material of choice, not just for churches but also for fortifications and castles.Under the influence of Frederick II and Christian IV , both of whom had been inspired by the castles of France , Dutch and Flemish designers were brought to Denmark, initially to improve the country’s fortifications, but increasingly to build magnificent royal castles and palaces in the Renaissance style. In parallel, the half-timbered style became popular for ordinary dwellings in towns and villages across the country.Late in his reign, Christian IV also became an early proponent of Baroque which was to continue for a considerable time with many impressive buildings both in the capital and the provinces. Neoclassicism came initially from France but was slowly adopted by native Danish architects who increasingly participated in defining architectural style. A productive period of Historicism ultimately merged into the 19th century National Romantic style .It was not, however, until the 1960s that Danish architects entered the world scene with their highly successful Functionalism . This, in turn, has evolved into more recent world-class masterpieces such as the Sydney Opera House and the Great Belt Bridge paving the way for a number of Danish designers to be rewarded for excellence both at home and |

Calvin’s Passion For The Church And The Holy Spirit $14.11 A New Look at John Calvin John Calvin was born in France in 1509. He was one of the greatest church reformers of the sixteenth century. At age twenty-seven, he published the first edition of his Institutes of the Christian Religion. He went to Geneva to do his difficult but epoch-making Christian work in 1536 and died in 1564. He preached and lectured more than four hundred times each year, and produced fifty-nine volumes of the Calvini Opera. In addition to being a great theologian he was a serious church worker who, with complete self-dedication, persistently labored for the effectiveness of the mission of the Church with his great passion to follow the direction of the Holy Spirit. Here the author provides rich materials for people to understand how and why Calvin was so passionate about the success of the mission of the Church and the necessity of following the direction of the Holy Spirit. The Author David S. Chen, B.Th., B.D., Th.M., S.T.M., Th.D., was a professor of systematic theology, Christian ethics, and world religions at Taiwan Theological Seminary in Taipei, Taiwan. Towards the end of his teaching he was its president. Afterwards, he served the First Reformed Church in Ridgewood, New Jersey for twenty years. After his retirement, he continued to preach for many Christian congregations. Currently, he and his musician wife, Margaret are active members of the First Presbyterian Church in Easton, Pennsylvania. Their grown children are Shirley and John, and their grandchildren are Jeffrey and Victoria. |

Coastal Settlements in Germany: Kiel $9.43 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Kiel – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia St. Niclas’ Church was built in the 13th century and is the oldest building in Kiel. The Kiel Fjord was first settled by Normans or Vikings who would colonize the land along their raids, for many years staying in German villages. This is recorded by the geography and architecture of the fjord. Kiel was originally founded in 1233 as Holstenstadt tom Kyle by Count Adolf IV, and granted Lübeck city rights in 1242 by Adolf’s eldest son, John I of Schauenburg. Kiel, the capital of Holstein, was a member of the Hanseatic League from 1284 until it was expelled in 1518 for harbouring pirates. In 1431, the Kieler Umschlag (trade fair) was first held, which became the central market for goods and money in Schleswig-Holstein, until it began to lose significance from 1850 on, being held for the last time in 1900. The port and Kiel Fjord. The Botanical Garden during winter. Kiel’s Opera HouseThe University of Kiel was founded on 29 September 1665, by Christian Albert, Duke of Holstein-Gottorp. A number of important scholars, including Theodor Mommsen and Max Planck, studied or taught there. From 1773 to 1864, the town belonged to the King of Denmark. However, because the king ruled Holstein as a fief of the Holy Roman Empire only through a personal union, the town was not incorporated as part of Denmark proper. Thus Kiel belonged to Germany, but it was ruled by the Danish king. Even though the Empire was abolished in 1806, the Danish king continued to rule Kiel, only through his position as Duke of Holstein. When Schleswig and Holstein rebelled against Denmark in 1848 (the First Schleswig War), Kiel became the capital of Schleswig-Holstein until the Danish victory in 1852. During the Second Schleswig War in 1864, Kiel… More: |

Conducting $70.99 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Conducting is the act of directing a musical performance by way of visible gestures. Orchestras, choirs, concert bands and other musical ensembles often have conductors. The principal conductor of an orchestra or opera company is sometimes referred to as a music director or chief conductor, or by the German word, Kapellmeister. Conductors of choirs or choruses are sometimes referred to as choral director, chorus master, or choirmaster, particularly for choirs associated with an orchestra. Conductors of military bands and other bands may hold the title of bandmaster, or drum major. Respected senior conductors are sometimes referred to by the Italian word, maestro (“master”). An early form of conducting is cheironomy, the use of hand gestures to indicate melodic shape. This has been practiced at least as far back as the Middle Ages. In the Christian church, the person giving these symbols held a staff to signify his role, and it seems that as music became more rhythmically involved, the staff was moved up and down to indicate the beat, acting as an early form of baton. |

Excerpt: Freetown Christiania – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Shed used 1946-50 for execution of World War II collaborators. Present ruins are inside Christiania’s area. The area of Christiania consists of the former military barracks of Bådsmandsstræde and parts of the city ramparts. The ramparts and the borough of Christianshavn (then a separate city) were established in 1617 by King Christian IV by reclaiming the low beaches and islets between Copenhagen and Amager. After the siege of Copenhagen during the harsh wars with Sweden, the ramparts were reinforced during 1682 to 1692 under Christian V to form a complete defence ring. The western ramparts of Copenhagen were demolished during the 19th century, but those of Christianshavn were allowed to remain. They are today considered among the finest surviving 17th century defence works in the world. The barracks of Bådsmandsstræde (Bådsmandsstrædes Kaserne) housed the Royal Artillery Regiment, the Army Materiel Command and ammunition laboratories and depots. Less used after World War II, the barracks were abandoned during 1967 to 1971. The adjacent area to the north, Holmen, was Denmark’s main naval base until the 1990s. It is an area in development, home to the new Copenhagen Opera House (not to be confused with the original Operaen – a concert venue in Christiania) and schools. The concrete foundation and a drain from the last Danish execution site, active from 1946 to 1950, can still be seen on the Third Redan of the rampart, in Christiania terms called Autogena on Dyssen (the remote part of Christiania across the moat). In total, 29 World War II criminals were executed on the site. The last was Ib Birkedal, a high-level Danish Gestapo collaborator, on 20 July 1950. Glass house in Freetown |
