“In this book David Lyle Jeffrey seeks to characterize illustratively the historical commitment of Christianity to the literacy and literature of Western culture. Against postmodernist tendencies to deride the historical commitment to meaning in Western art and literature as a regressive “logocentrism,” Jeffrey argues that the biblical tradition-the cultural and literary identity forged among Western Christians by virtue of being a “People of the Book”-has in fact given rise to Western literacy. Jeffrey looks at the Christian “grand narrative” as it is reflected in Western literature, making apt use of the visual arts by incorporating a series of twenty-eight black-and-white illustrations that enrich and fortify the story it tells.”

”Left to themselves, the Cherokee would become a prosperous, independent commonwealth, and would never sell their lands”: Cherokees, slaves and Moravians at Springplace Mission, Georgia, 1799–1838.

$49.99

This dissertation examines the responses of the Cherokee Nation and of Moravian Protestant missionaries working amongst them to the United States’ ‘civilization’ program in the early nineteenth-century. It draws upon the extensive records of the Brethren’s Springplace mission in northern Georgia to show that both the Cherokees and the Moravians used the program as an umbrella under which to pursue their own agendas. Each group only adopted those elements of ‘civilization’ that allowed them to further their own aims. Neither accepted the ethos driving the program, namely that Indigenous peoples needed to absorb white culture and worldviews wholesale to become acculturated ‘white Indians’ in order to function in the mainstream of American life. These actions undermined the fundamental beliefs that the ‘civilization’ program was grounded upon, and contributed to acculturation’s replacement with removal.;The Cherokee resisted acculturation by adopting only those elements of the ‘civilization’ program that would not undermine their own cultural identity. This meant that the literacy missionaries offered was welcomed, but their Christian religious message was not. Literacy would allow the Cherokee to function without disadvantage in the white world, by guarding them against fraud, but Christianity had no functional purpose for the Cherokee, and thus it was rejected in favor of continued adherence to Indigenous beliefs and practices. Cherokee men such as James Vann also rejected the imposition of Western gender roles, and refused to take up the plow and get involved in agriculture, traditionally women’s work amongst the Cherokee. Instead Vann and others like him adopted chattel slavery, allowing them to exchange the traditional Cherokee male pursuits of hunting and war for trade and business without being emasculated by having to adopt a traditionally feminine role in agriculture.;The Moravians also undermined the ‘civilization’ program by pursuing only the religious

”Oh, for a thousand tongues to sing”: Music and worship in African American megachurches of Los Angeles, California.

$49.99

This dissertation is an ethnographic account of African American sacred music performed in the worship services of African American megachurches in Los Angeles, California. A megachurch is a church with a congregation of at least five thousand members or one whose Sunday morning services has at least twenty-five hundred people in attendance. To illustrate how African American religious music traditions have been maintained and changed, I have documented and examined the musical styles preferred by members of three predominantly African American megachurches in metropolitan Los Angeles: First African Methodist Episcopal Church, West Angeles Church of God in Christ, and Faithful Central Bible Church.;Scholars have demonstrated that ethnic identity and the social realities of African Americans are often expressed in their music. As the conditions of Black life in America change, so does the music produced by African Americans, causing stylistic changes to be inevitable. However, there are times when stylistic changes are deliberately adopted to create an ideal environment or familiar atmosphere in a new context. The emergence of African American megachurches in cities across the country over the last thirty years has provided new contexts for African American Christian worship.;Through comparative analysis of the three congregations as well as a case study of the Faithful Central, I have: (1) delineated how Black megachurches are preserving older genres of African American sacred music (i.e. hymns, spirituals, classic gospel), (2) described the musical and non-musical factors that influence the music preferences of congregations, and (3) described the degree(s) to which some large urban congregations are adapting praise and worship to overcome the challenges to interactive and intimate worship.;To place these churches within the context of the historic Black Church tradition, I present information on African American sacred music, the gospel music community of Los

”The Indians would be too near us”: Paths of disunion in the making of Kansas, 1848–1870.

$49.99

The dissertation complicates the familiar narrative about the coming of the Civil War in American national history by exploring how several Native American groups participated in the conflicts of Kansas Territory.;The creation of Kansas in the lands reserved for removed tribes brought fervent local negotiation over land and treaty rights between Indians and whites. Most Indians were forced to select new options and allegiances by the impositions of white settlers’ agendas and federal initiatives. Rather than hapless victims of settler manipulation, members of several reservation communities on the Kansas-Missouri border, among a total of twenty-six tribes, vied for political and legal control in ways that shaped and salvaged the legal survival and identities of these tribal nations.;The dissertation examines how two members of the Wyandot community negotiated their identities around divergent American discourses of race and ethnicity, how the Christian Moravian Indian community contested the terms of their own future collective place and identity, how the New York Indians vied for treaty rights in competition with settlers’ claims groups, and how the Delaware Indians responded to legal violations by whites. The multi-faceted conflicts left many Indians to choose sides between competing white political partisans and between a future of U.S. citizenship or separate tribal collectivity. Over these chapters, Indians negotiate their own individual or group identities by the maintenance or expansion of particular discourses of difference. The choices and discourses related to Indian collectivity were, in part, colonial legacies that informed tribal nationalism and identity later in time.;The importance of territorial Kansas is not simply a battle between white partisans over the fate of slavery and democratic government, but also a critical struggle between Indians and whites that re-defined racial and ethnic identities and collective rights of Native peoples during the

 'My Lines and Life'

‘My Lines and Life’

George Herbert (1593-1633) offers an intriguing case of a poet actively dealing with the problem of authority. Through a reading of Herbert’s main volume of poetry, The Temple: Sacred Poems and Private Ejaculations, Herbert is seen to position the poet’s authority over his verse in relation to the authority of the Christian God. This thesis argues that Herbert entertains an idea of dual authority; that two authors, human and divine, are at work to bring forth the poem. To clarify the notion, the poem is understood as both an act and an artefact: The first is lived, the second recorded in lines of poetry. This duality forms the basis for a poetics of integrity, where the lines and life of the poet must accord in order for the poem to be successful. In extension, Herbert’s view of poetry suggests both an ideal poet as well as an ideal reader, rooted in Herbert’s own Christian identity.

(Re)writing identity: New literacy practices among the Prai of northern Thailand.

This study presents the literacy practices of an ethnic minority group called the Prai who live in northern Thailand and Laos. New literacy practices of reading and writing Prai were first introduced to the Prai in the 1990's and today there are twenty adult readers of Prai among the estimated 20,000 Prai in Thailand. All readers of Prai participated in this study thereby providing a unique and comprehensive look at literacy practices in the Prai language. Secondarily, this study reaches beyond an ethnographic description of literacy practices to understand the relationship between literacy practices and Prai ethnic identity. The findings of this study show everyday literacy practices for the Prai as well as a comprehensive look at literacy practices in the Prai language. The Prai face many challenges including an educational system and a given ethnic identity that marginalizes Prai language and culture. Despite many difficulties, twenty Prai readers have adapted reading and writing Prai to home, work and Christian literacy types in creative and culturally appropriate ways. New literacy practices have influenced conceptions of language and ethnic identity among the Prai. In addition, select Prai readers use literacy to form Prai ethnic identity or to contest the identity they are given by the Thai. Conclusions show that the source of new literacy practices and the introduction of Prai literacy have influenced conceptions and uses of Prai literacy. Prai literacy is perceived to be a Christian practice and is largely relegated to the private sphere. Reading Prai is valued over writing Prai. Gender and education influence who uses Prai literacy to form Prai ethnic identity and contest given ethnic identity. As a trend, Prai women with fewer than six years of Thai school are more likely to use Prai literacy to form or contest Prai ethnic identity. These Prai readers have become local agents and ambassadors of literacy who create and sustain new literacy practices.

 1 Peter (New Testament Guides)

1 Peter (New Testament Guides)

$57.06

This volume offers a concise and accessible introduction to 1 Peter, especially aimed at undergraduate-level students. It provides information on the likely historical and social setting of this letter, on its literary form and theological content, and on issues involved in its interpretation. In particular, this volume suggests that 1 Peter is an important text not least for the ways in which it both reflects and constructs early Christian identity, in its relationships with Judaism and the Roman Empire. Although 1 Peter remains neglected compared with the canonical gospels and the major Pauline letters, Horrell argues that the letter deserves much more attention for the pivotal contribution it makes to the development of early Christianity and for the ways in which it reveals this development in progress.

Excerpt: The History of Little Henry and his Bearer (1814) was a popular children’s book written by Mary Martha Sherwood. It was continuously in print for 70 years after its initial publication and was translated into French, German, Spanish, Hindustani (1814; 1873), Chinese, Marathi (1853), Tamil (1840), and Sinhalese. Telling the story of a young British boy who, on his deathbed, converts Boosy, the Indian man who has taken care of him throughout his childhood, the book is dominated by imperialistic and evangelical themes. Sherwood’s tale blends the realistic with the sentimental and introduces her readers to Hindustani words and descriptions of what she felt was authentic Indian life. As children’s literature scholar M. Nancy Cutt explains, “with this work, the obituary tract (which invariably stressed conversion and a Christian death) had assumed the colouring of romance”. Frontispiece to a later edition of The History of Little Henry and his Bearer (c. 1830)In 1823 Sherwood published a female version of the story entitled The History of Little Lucy and her Dhaye, although this tale was much less popular than Little Henry, going through only four editions. In both books she “presents the children’s intimacy with and love for their Indian caretakers as an early impediment to their development of a strong English identity; she then offers Evangelical Anglican Christianity, with its emphasis on the missionary impulse to convert others, as a solution to that problem”. As Dara Regaignon explains, in the two stories “conversion ‘saves’ Henry and Lucy by teaching them that some religions and

A Captive Voice: The Liberation of Preaching

$20

In A Captive Voice, David Buttrick encourages pastors to look afresh at the Bible, church, culture, and Christian identity in order to answer the question of how to preach. Buttrick examines the renewal of ecclesiology in the mid-twentieth century, a time when the high-hung pulpits were scaled down as preaching came to be seen as a conversation among friends in Christ.
