Seven long-forgotten classic blues singers are featured on this CD, which has their total output. Alice Leslie Carter is heard on 11 dated but often charming performances from 1921, in which she is backed by a combo led by pianist James P. Johnson, including the debut vocal recording of “Aunt Hagar’s Children Blues.” Josephine Carter fares OK on four numbers, while Margaret Carter’s two numbers in 1926 (“I Want Plenty Grease in My Frying Pan” and “Come Get Me, Papa, Before I Faint”) are excellent, making one wish that she had recorded again. Alta Cates’ lone title (the ironically titled “Never Again”) is forgettable while Juanita Stinette Chappelle’s only solo side (she normally recorded as a team with her husband) is fine. Finishing off this set are two numbers apiece from Alice Clinton (who is probably actress Nina Mae McKinney under a pseudonym) in 1928 and the fine lowdown blues singer Anna Belle Coleman, who would have been considered out-of-date in 1930. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi Performers: Buddy Christian – Banjo; Buddy Christian’s Creole Five – Banjo; Jules Levy – Cornet; June Clark – Cornet; Alice Clinton – Vocals; Alice Leslie Carter – Vocals; Alta Cates – Vocals; Anna Belle Coleman – Vocals; Bill Hegamin – Piano;

Tell Them We Are Singing for Jesus: The Original Fisk Jubilee Singers and Christian Reconstruction,

“Between 1871 and 1878, the Jubilee Singers presented concerts featuring the Negro spiritual that won the applause and admiration of the Western world. The rise and renown of the original Fisk Jubilee Singer form one of the most celebrated stories of post-Civil War America. Equally fascinating are the varied, multitudinous influences that converged to catapult them onto the world’s stage and into the annals of history.> “Tell Them We Are Singing for Jesus” explores the Christian missionary ideals and convictions that spawned the Fisk Jubilee Singers during the 1870s and guided the ensemble throughout its impressive US and European travels. This historic choral ensemble was sponsored by the American Missionary Association (AMA), the parent organization of Fisk University. > Through a unique partnership that blended ministry and music, the AMA and the Jubilee Singers fought to establish a world in which the freedom message of the Negro spiritual rang true.”

 Jane Froman

Jane Froman

$15.95

Once asked to name the ten best female singers, the renowned musical producer Billy Rose replied, There is Jane Froman and nine others. A legend in her time, Jane Froman (1907-1980) was one of Missouri’s greatest success stories. Her singing career, which spanned over three decades, included radio and television, recordings, nightclub performances, Broadway shows, and Hollywood movies. Born in University City, Froman spent her childhood in the small town of Clinton and her adolescence in Columbia. After earning her associate degree from Christian (now Columbia) College, she auditioned as a vocalist for WLW, a Cincinnati radio station, and in 1934, she was voted the top girl singer of the day in a poll of listeners. At the height of her career, during World War II, Froman volunteered to travel for the USO. On February 22, 1943, the plane she was in crashed into the Tagus River in Lisbon, Portugal. Although she suffered horrible injuries that plauged her for the rest of her life, she continued her singing career. On crutches, she entertained the troops, giving ninety-five shows throughout Europe. Her courageous return was the focus of the 1952 movie With a Song in My Heart. Susan Hayward played Froman, but for scenes that required singing performances, recordings of Froman herself were used, and the movie soundtrack became a best-selling record album. Froman’s popularity led to her own television show from 1952 to 1955. In 1961, Froman retired from singing and returned to Columbia, Missouri, where she was active in volunteer work and lived out her remaining years. Drawing upon an autobiography that Froman started but never finished, Ilene Stone skillfully uses the singer’s own words,along with other resource materials and extensive interviews with people who knew Froman, to produce the first biography of this extraordinary woman. Written in a clear and accessible style, Jane Froman: Missouri’s First Lady of Song will be of great value to anyone interested in Misso

Looking for the title artist Christian country-rock song / with the words "read between the lines" – the singer

Today (11-22-07 Action Thanksgiving), I heard the last half of a Christian song with a beautiful singer and the band with a rock country folk flavor that has been repeated words of "reading between lines", then "writing on the wall. "Of course, the station has not say who he was when the song ended. I would appreciate very much if someone out there knows who he is and I want to know. I researched Internet with these terms and found nothing. Thank you.

It could be either Leigh Nash and his song "between the lines" or "wall." She is an artist Christian and their music is pop-rock influences and American folk.
