''Amen, I Say to You'': Sunday Homilies for Cycles A, B, and C and Homilies for Holy Days of Obligation

”Amen, I Say to You”: Sunday Homilies for Cycles A, B, and C and Homilies for Holy Days of Obligation

$26.72

Amen, I Say to You includes homilies for Cycles A, B, and C of the liturgical year, and a homily for each Holy Day of Obligation within the Roman Catholic Church. Each homily consist of three main points with supporting examples and illustrations. These are homilies I have preached, and they have been constructed with attention to verbal presentation. Another homilist easily should be able to substitute or include examples from his or her own pastoral or lived experience within the conceptual structure each homily provides. These homilies are not essays; they include no long, convoluted, hard to understand sentences. I try for simplicity of words and sentences, for concrete language everyone can understand. Feedback from posting some of the homilies on the internet has characterized the homilies as well planned, with ideas placed in a logical and precise order. They have been called “simple, personal, and practical;” “very inspired and insightful;” containing “deep reflection and authentic Christian faith;” and “illustrative, applied and down to earth practical.”

”And that is where we start”: Focal stances and a person’s capacity to name God as Trinity.

$49.99

Starting with the assertion that God who is relationship invites humanity to share this relationship, the dissertation pursues that which signals humanity’s gifted capacity to take part. It finds an investment into the heart of Christian faith visible as individual theologians articulate the meaningfulness of the doctrine of Trinity, and argues that these investments – which it names “focal stances” – come about because of the way God honors individual integrity. Ultimately, focal stances take shape as persons bring encounter with divine mystery into expression both through the power of naming and by living the new life the encounter enables.;This argument arises from a constructive analysis of the trinitarian theologies of Elizabeth Johnson and Rowan Williams, an analysis which demonstrates that focal stances are in operation as both speak about Trinity. The analysis shows how the exercise of “becoming understanding,” by traversing through appropriation, explanation and assessment, and attestation, produces in the theologian a focal stance which serves as a normative guide as one articulates the meaningfulness of the doctrine.;Further support for the argument is drawn from the exercise of interpreting Sacred Scripture, finding in this field descriptions of “becoming understanding” which seek to honor the integrity of text and interpreter. The dissertation takes up Hugh of St Victor, Raymond Brown, David Williams, and Sandra Schneiders, in order to show how persons are charged to name and appropriate the scriptures, all the while in deference to the world of the text given over to human understanding. There is a similarity between the boundaries faith navigates when it responds to Trinity, and the boundaries attendant to respecting Sacred Scripture as both a human construction and the word of God.;As the proper response to God’s invitation into relationship includes developing a focal stance, the project concludes that the discipline of theology should retrieve the

''Caring for the least of these'': Christian women's short-term mission travel.

”Caring for the least of these”: Christian women’s short-term mission travel.

$49.99

This dissertation explores how Christian women strategically activated social networks to do short-term mission (STM) and take on new leadership roles, creatively reinventing and rejuvenating themselves through international volunteerism. A growing religious movement, STM carework is a democratized grassroots phenomenon, typically featuring bottom-up entrepreneurial agency rather than top-down central planning and control which lends itself to women’s involvement. This research used global ethnography and visual analysis to examine and theorize how social capital and resource brokering was built locally and globally, bridging and linking women within two respective groups across international spaces: (1) an incorporated not-for-profit medical professional group that traveled regularly to Africa; and (2) a suburban women’s ministry group from a megachurch who conducted a large women’s retreat in the Domincan Republic and also worked in an orphanage. The first group included team members from mainline, Catholic and evangelical traditions. The second group incorporated Latina women from the megachurch’s Hispanic sister congregation, and included four Latina women on the traveling team. Each group’s activities and narratives illuminated the crucial role of cultural brokers to mediate material and symbolic resources essential to the achievement of their work on behalf of those deemed “needy.” Also, examination of normally private marital gender relations revealed that couples negotiated fender roles either in ways they had already practiced (egalitarian) or in exceptional ways (unbending gender roles).;Research on Christian women’s STM resource brokering contributes to studies on congregations, volunteerism, civil society, social capital, faith-based initiatives, international development, women’s religion, tourism, pilgrimage, and religion and globalization. Both professional and stay-at-home mothers benefitted from regularized church/state funding structures (pooled

”Siris” revisited: Did Berkeley change his mind?

$49.99

This dissertation argues that Siris is a continuation of Berkeley’s earlier theological and philosophical views. The Berkeley of Siris is the same Berkeley of the Commentaries, Principles, Dialogues, and Alciphron. Furthermore, Siris is an important piece to the Berkelean puzzle.;Chapter 1 demonstrates the correlation between Berkeley’s Bermuda project and Siris.;Chapter 2 responds to scholars who argue that in Siris Berkeley departs from the Christian faith and argues that Berkeley’s primary goal in Siris is to promote Christianity.;Chapter 3 shows that it is evident from Siris (as in his other writings) that Berkeley is a weak panentheist, a term I define and use to contrast Berkeley with Moltmann. Berkeley’s weak panentheism stems from his theocentric idealism and allows him to remain orthodox.;Chapter 4 contends that while most scholars categorize Berkeley as a rule-utilitarian, he should actually be regarded as a virtue theorist. Siris is an important text to understanding Berkeley’s moral philosophy.;Chapter 5 contains a summary of the conclusions drawn from this project, as well as suggestions for further research.

''The fire and the rose are one'': The coherence of the prophetic voice in the poetry of T. S. Eliot.

”The fire and the rose are one”: The coherence of the prophetic voice in the poetry of T. S. Eliot.

$49.99

Contrary to much scholarship on T. S Eliot’s poetry, I argue that Eliot’s work cannot be divided into the two separate categories of before and after The Waste Land. While most of the imagery of Eliot’s earlier poems admittedly tends to be much darker than that of his later poems, it is irresponsible to disregard the general bent of the entirety of Eliot’s poetry in order to claim that this difference in imagery reflects a total transformation of Eliot’s message from one of strict pessimism to one of faith in the Anglican religion. Rather, much biographical and textual evidence shows that both The Waste Land and the Four Quartets take part in the same tradition, with Eliot always keeping the same prophetic aim in mind, that is to awaken a spiritual consciousness in his readers. By examining the influences of Eliot’s early studies in pre-reformation Catholicism and medieval Christian mysticism (culminating around 1914), I illustrate the continuing importance of each in both of Eliot’s long poems. Most important to my study is the clear and abiding influence of one particular modern work on Christian Mysticism: Evelyn Underhill’s Mysticsim: The Preeminent Study in the Nature and Development of Spiritual Consciousness (1911). Analyzing Underhill’s work along with The Waste Land and Four Quartets brings to light strong thematic similarities regarding ideas on Christian Mysticism that are present in both of Eliot’s greatest poems.

'And So We Came to Rome ': The Political Perspective of St Luke

‘And So We Came to Rome ‘: The Political Perspective of St Luke

$35

It has often been suggested that Luke’s two volumes were written as an apology for Christianity, to demonstrate to the Roman authorities that the new faith was not a dangerous and subversive innovation, a threat to the Pax Romana and to Roman rule. This book reviews the development of the ‘traditional perspective’, then raises some questions, e.g. if Luke was writing an apologia pro ecclesia, why does he include so much material politically damaging to the Christian cause? Is it possible that the approach has been made from the wrong angle, that Luke was writing an apologia not pro ecclesia but pro imperio, to assure his fellow Christians that Church and Empire need not fear or suspect each other? This conclusion is then supported by an investigation of the text of Luke-Acts, particularly the trials of Jesus and Paul. This challenging volume will be of interest to students and scholars of the New Testament and to ecclesiastical and Roman historians.

 'Can-Do!' Christianity

‘Can-Do!’ Christianity

$9.32

Circumstances can sometimes seem to crush even the most mature of Christians. So how do we develop faith in God’s ability to see us through? ‘Can-Do!’ Christianity is a word-by-word study of Philippians 4:13 in which the much-tested Apostle Paul states that he can do anything through his source of strength, Jesus Christ. This book makes a tangible connection between God’s Word and His work in the Christian’s life. A liberal sprinkling of anecdotes, illustrations and quotes keep it interesting, upbeat and an easy read that fits well with today’s busy lifestyles.Debi Derrick has taken the truths about how to live the Christian life and reduced them to simple, but profound rules for living. Following the instructions that you’ll find in this book will surely help you, as it has helped me, to live out the Christian faith. I strongly recommend this book for your reading.Tony Campolo, Ph.D.Professor Emeritus Eastern University St. Davids, PA 19087A professional communicator and avid student of the Bible, Debi Derrick is also a lover of good stories, especially the ones that make us laugh or feel like tomorrow will definitely be a better day. She calls herself a triple PK because of the many family members involved in ministry. And although she accepted Christ at an early age, she certainly has not been insulated from experiencing the traumas of life. She does, however, draw on these when presenting practical, down-to-earth views of God’s place in a Christian’s life. Debi lives in Texas where she is active in her church and community.

The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. The Age of Enlightenment profoundly enriched religious and philosophical understanding and continues to influence present-day thinking. Works collected here include masterpieces by David Hume, Immanuel Kant, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, as well as religious sermons and moral debates on the issues of the day, such as the slave trade. The Age of Reason saw conflict between Protestantism and Catholicism transformed into one between faith and logic — a debate that continues in the twenty-first century.++++The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title. ... but to Minister

… but to Minister

My complete surrender to the Lord as a young man of 22, was the best decision I ever made. The second best decision was to marry Lois Tyson, whom I met at Bob Jones University in 1951.I spent my boyhood days, first on a farm and then in a small town during the years of the Great Depression of the 1930s. Then came World War 2, when I was in high school. It was a long war; 1941-45.As soon as I graduated I went into the U.S. Navy and served as a seaman aboard the U.S.S. Pocono, the Flagship of the Atlantic Fleet. After leaving the Navy in 1946, I attended the University of Pittsburgh by virtue of the G.I. Bill, which paid college tuition and books for World War 2 servicemen. I graduated in June 1950, with a major in Business Administration and a minor in History.During my senior year at Pitt, I was under deep conviction of my need of complete surrender to the Lord. I had been raised in a Christian home and we went to a fundamental church, but I had too many distractions (the war years and getting a college education) to get serious about spiritual things. However, the “Hound of Heaven” tracked me down and in December of 1950, I made that greatest decision of all, to completely surrender to the Lord Jesus Christ as my Savior and Lord. I said, “Lord Jesus, I am yours and You are mine.” I never looked back. Thus began a great journey of faith and service. Within the pages of “…but to minister,” I tell this wondrous story. I hope you enjoy it.God bless you.

The new believers in Thessalonica, despite maintaining their faith in the face of persecution, misunderstood the Second Coming of Christ. In response, Paul wrote to them, giving them instruction about the kinds of lives they should lead in anticipation of Christ’s return. His teaching provides helpful summaries of what it means to live the Christian life.

1-2 Peter and Jude

$24.99

In this volume in the Believers Church Bible Commentary (BCBC) Series, Erland Waltner explains how 1 Peter applies Jesus’ teaching on loving the enemy to the life situation of scattered Christians in Asia Minor. Peter empowers believers to be communities of hope, not retaliating for abuse they suffer, but bearing witness to their living Lord by word, transformed lifestyle, and doing good.J. Daryl Charles admits that 2 Peter and Jude are hard for us to understand. Yet he shows how these letters are relevant since the church still faces ethical compromises and pastoral dilemmas. Their apocalyptic imagery stresses that the concerns of Christian faithfulness and faith are absolutely crucial. The church needs such moral exhortation.

Christian Faith
Christian Faith
Do you think that The Christian Faith, the West is very different now from what the ancient Israelites believed?

As more and more things are explained by natural means. The story of the creation of this faith is now seen as metaphorical, but if you study the ancient cultures of the region who have stories similar establishment that believed deeply because they had no way of understanding life.
