Excerpt: The Age of Reason; Being an Investigation of True and Fabulous Theology is a deistic pamphlet, written by eighteenth-century British radical and American revolutionary Thomas Paine, that criticizes institutionalized religion and challenges the legitimacy of the Bible. Published in three parts in 1794, 1795, and 1807, it was a bestseller in America, where it caused a short-lived deistic revival. British audiences, however, fearing increased political radicalism as a result of the French Revolution, received it with more hostility. The Age of Reason presents common deistic arguments; for example, it highlights what Paine saw as corruption of the Christian Church and criticizes its efforts to acquire political power. Paine advocates reason in the place of revelation, leading him to reject miracles and to view the Bible as an ordinary piece of literature rather than as a divinely inspired text. It promotes natural religion and argues for a creator-God. Religion and education served the Revolutionary generation by reinforcing an innate sense of duty wherein all obligation was reciprocal. Ambivalent Churchmen and Evangelical Churchwomen: The Religion of the Episcopal Elite in North Carolina, 1800-1860 $30.1 Richard Rankin probes the religious, intellectual, and social lives of North Carolina’s antebellum elite to expose the dramatic effect of religious revival in the first half of the nineteenth century. Rankin uses family letters and church records to document an embrace of evangelism’s emotionalism by the female upper class, a swift objection to evangelism’s egalitarian tenets by the male upper class, and the domestic tension that ensued. Rankin evaluates the revival of the Episcopal church as a male strategy to replace evangelism with a more conservative approach to religion, and he speculates that it was North Carolina’s escalating quarrel with northern states over slavery that effectively convinced women to abandon their religious enthusiasm. Dispelling the myth of the plantation-era Christian gentleman, Rankin argues that wealthy North Carolina males lived not by Christian doctrine but by an ethic of reason and honor. Similarly, females followed a fashionable social code. Rankin shows that as revival spread, many upper-class women experienced spiritual rebirth, focused their lives on the church rather than on social circles, and attempted to convert their husbands to fundamental Christianity as well as a more intimate, caring type of marriage. Rankin says that upper-class males, however, were determined to resist a force that would upset a social order over which they presided. While rarely becoming full communing members themselves – an act which would have prevented the dueling, drinking, and womanizing that their code of honor allowed – these men encouraged their wives, daughters, and sisters to submit to the high churchmanship of conservative Episcopal priests. In chroniclingthe subsequent growth of the Episcopal church, Rankin credits a growing fear of slave unrest and the Abolitionist Movement rather than the male upper class or the Episcopal clergy with squelching religious fervor among North Carolina’s female aristocracy. |

As one of the first and most successful Christian extreme metal bands in the world, they serve as inspiration for many of today’s Christian metal bands. Over the years Mortification has released over twenty records and several videos on major record labels such as Nuclear Blast. After the departure of their original drummer Mortification began experimenting with groove metal, hardcore punk and power metal. Sherlock was the founder of the one-man project Unblack metal band Horde, in which he played every instrument. He has also been in other bands such as Paramaecium, InExordium, Altera Enigma, Soundscape and Where Shadows Lie. Sherlock is known for his peculiar and extremely fast double bass pedal and blast beat technique. He also plays guitar and bass. There have also been rumors circulating that he received death threats for his coining of the Unblack Metal genre. In 1990 Sherlock joined Mortification after Steve Rowe disbanded LightForce, established the new band and released Mortification’s debut album Break the Curse. Excerpt: The Age of Reason; Being an Investigation of True and Fabulous Theology is a deistic pamphlet, written by eighteenth-century British radical and American revolutionary Thomas Paine, that criticizes institutionalized religion and challenges the legitimacy of the Bible. Published in three parts in 1794, 1795, and 1807, it was a bestseller in America, where it caused a short-lived deistic revival. British audiences, however, fearing increased political radicalism as a result of the French Revolution, received it with more hostility. The Age of Reason presents common deistic arguments; for example, it highlights what Paine saw as corruption of the Christian Church and criticizes its efforts to acquire political power. Paine advocates reason in the place of revelation, leading him to reject miracles and to view the Bible as an ordinary piece of literature rather than as a divinely inspired text. It promotes natural religion and argues for a creator-God. Most of Paine’s arguments had long been available to the educated elite, but by presenting them in an engaging and irreverent style, he made deism appealing and accessible to a mass audience. The book was also inexpensive, putting it within the reach of a large number of buyers. Fearing the spread of what they viewed as potentially revolutionary ideas, the British government prosecuted printers and booksellers who tried to publish and distribute it. Paine nevertheless inspired and guided many British freethinkers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and his influence and spirit endures in the works of contemporary writers like Christopher Hitchens. … Have you not modern Christian scientists can boast? Because me or almost any other of my brothers could atheist get some statistics showing how accepted conclusively that the educated elite of society does not care much for religion …
At first, scientists may also have been atheists because in those days, people would be lying if they were hanged or burned to death by declaring openly that they are atheists. There were no atheists around because they are killed immediately. Hahehaha.
