Dictionary of Christian Spirituality $39.99 “In recent decades Christian spirituality, spiritual formation and spiritual theology have become important concepts in the global evangelical community. Consequently, an accessible and reliable academic resource is needed on these topics—one that will offer a discerning orientation to the wealth of ecumenical resources available while still highlighting the distinct heritage and affirming the core grace-centered values of classic evangelical spirituality. The Dictionary of Christian Spirituality reflects an overarching interpretive framework for evangelical spiritual formation: a holistic and grace-filled spirituality that encompasses relational (connecting), transformational (becoming), and vocational (doing) dynamics. At the same time, contributors respectfully acknowledge the differences between Reformed, Holiness, and Pentecostal paradigms of the spiritual life. And, by bringing together writers from around the world who share a common orthodoxy, this reference work is truly global and international in both its topical scope and contributors. Entries give appropriate attention to concepts, concerns, and formative figures in the evangelical tradition of spirituality that other reference work neglect. They offer a discerning orientation to the wealth of ecumenical resources available, exploring the similarities and differences between Christianity and alternate spiritualities without lapsing into relativism. The Dictionary of Christian Spirituality is a resource that covers a wide range of topics relating to Christian spirituality and is biblically engaged, accessible, and relevant for all contemporary Christians.” |

Chapters: 1721 Novels, Persian Letters, 1721 in Literature, an Universal Etymological English Dictionary. Source: Wikipedia. Free updates online. Not illustrated. Excerpt: Persian Letters (Lettres persanes, written 1721) is a satirical work by Charles de Secondat, baron de Montesquieu, recounting the experiences of two Persian noblemen, Usbek and Rica, who are traveling through France. In 1711 Usbek leaves his seraglio in Isfahan to undertake the long journey to France, accompanied by his young friend Rica. He leaves behind five wives (Zachi, Zéphis, Fatmé, Zélis, and Roxane) in the care of a number of black eunuchs, one of whom is the head or first eunuch. During the trip and their long stay in Paris (1712-1720), they comment, in letters exchanged with friends and mullahs, on numerous aspects of Western, Christian society, particularly French politics and mores, ending with a biting satire of the System of John Law. Over time, various disorders surface back in the seraglio, and beginning in 1717 (Letter 139 ), the situation there rapidly unravels. Usbek orders his head eunuch to crack down, but his message does not arrive in time and a revolt brings about the death of his wives, including the vengeful suicide of his favorite, Roxane, and, it appears, most of the eunuchs. The chronology breaks down as follows: The novel consisting of 150 letters appeared in May 1721 under the rubric Cologne: Pierre Marteau, a front for the Amsterdam publisher Jacques Desbordes whose business is now run by his widow, Susanne de Caux. Called edition A, this is the text utilized in the recent critical edition of Lettres persanes for the complete works of Montesquieu published by the Voltaire Foundation in 2004. A second edition (B) by the same publisher later in the same year, for which there is so far no |

A hyperlinked version of this chapter is at Anna at the presentation of Jesus (right), from Giotto, Chapel of Scrovegni. Anna (Hebrew : , Ancient Greek : ) or Anna the Prophetess was a biblical figure mentioned only in the Gospel of Luke . According to that Gospel, she was an aged Jewish prophetess who prophesied about Jesus at the Temple of Jerusalem . She appears in Luke 2:36-38 in the episode of the presentation of Jesus at the Temple . While Luke gave some elements, Anna’s life and background are obscure. From the three verses in Luke, the following is known of Anna: Age Luke describes Anna as “very old.” Many Bibles and older commentaries state that she was 84 years old. Modern translations, such as the NIV , ESV , CEV , and NLT , add a footnote indicating that another interpretation is possible. Literally, Luke 2:36-37 says that Anna “lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, and then was a widow until eighty-four years.” The passage |

4th-Century Christians $10.84 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Chapters: Lactantius, Hilary of Poitiers, Nemesius, Jovinian, Arnobius, Egeria, Prohaeresius, Aggenus Urbicus, Helvidius, Apollinaris, Macarius Magnes. Excerpt: Aggenus Urbicus was an ancient Roman technical writer on the science of the Agrimensores , that is, land surveying . It is uncertain when he lived; but he appears to have been a Christian , and it is not improbable from some expressions which he uses, that he lived at the latter part of the 4th century. There are three extant works ascribed to him. Aggeni Urbici in Julium Frontinum Commentarius, a commentary upon the work De Agrorum Qualitate, which is ascribed to Frontinus . Aggenus’ commentary was not well regarded by later writers; Karl Lachmann called it “the wretched work of some Christian schoolmaster”. The other two works are In Julium Frontinum Commentariorum Liber secundus qui Diazographus dicitur ; and Commentariorum de Controversiis Agrorum Pars prior et altera . The latter of which Carsten Niebuhr supposes to have been actually been written by Frontinus , and in the time of Domitian , that is, the end of the 1st century, since the author speaks of “praestantissimus Domitianus,” an expression which some feel would be unlikely to have been applied to this tyrant after his death. References (URLs online) This article incorporates text from the public domain Dictionary of Greek and Roman Biography and Mythology by William Smith (1870). A hyperlinked version of this chapter is at Apollinaris the Elder was a Christian grammarian of the fourth century, first in Berytus (now Beirut ) in Phoenicia , then in Laodicea in Syria . I came to understand that atheism "means anti-Christian?
Is it not true today in the verbiage that "Atheism" not used exactly as the dictionary definition that says: "the belief that God does not exist, or denial of God or gods exist "- but as anti-Christian God as God. I never met atheists who are very concerned that oppose Hinduism or Islam as anti-or anti-God Shiva. So atheism is a reaction against Christianity, then? Take Russell and Freud, both anti-Christian atheist. Right?
Not necessarily. I am an atheist because I do not think any true God. What experience is primarily because most Athiests have been raised in a Christian environment. This could be because Athiests in Muslim countries do not do so well. When a person begins to deny that there is a God, who will normally an attack phase of religion if they are raised, or your community is based in some people than this fairly quickly and move on, and some remain at this stage for the rest of their lives. Now, an atheist who grew to become an atheist or passive, or aggressive atheist. Athiests just passively live the life of ordinary people, without losing Sunday's game or the bar on Friday formerly Jewish. Athiests aggressive behavior of their case athiesm, awareness and dissemination generally good news (at least what they do best, ignore many purely and just this situation and go to step two) of a world without restrictions or sin, and secondly, the fight against what they perceive as errors (the most aggressive call "deliberate lies") religion. For my part, do not use any religion or God, Shiva or Thor. Allah did not really mean that it is behind a religion that seems to think enough of riots in the street just because someone violates their taste in cartoons art.
