A few decades ago nearly every country singer had at least one–often more–gospel albums in their catalog. Today, aside from gospel veteran Amy Grant, who balances the sacred and secular, and Randy Travis, that concept has long faded. The architect who designs a church is the shepherd of space, and church architecture, as part of the visual arts, can communicate where words fail. If one wants to translate the Gospel into another culture, both contextualization and indigenization would strongly suggest the need to use the vernacular in the architectural elements that attempt to substantiate in a church building both the Christian message, the Gospel, as well as its ecclesiology.

''Amen, I Say to You'': Sunday Homilies for Cycles A, B, and C and Homilies for Holy Days of Obligation

”Amen, I Say to You”: Sunday Homilies for Cycles A, B, and C and Homilies for Holy Days of Obligation

$26.72

Amen, I Say to You includes homilies for Cycles A, B, and C of the liturgical year, and a homily for each Holy Day of Obligation within the Roman Catholic Church. Each homily consist of three main points with supporting examples and illustrations. These are homilies I have preached, and they have been constructed with attention to verbal presentation. Another homilist easily should be able to substitute or include examples from his or her own pastoral or lived experience within the conceptual structure each homily provides. These homilies are not essays; they include no long, convoluted, hard to understand sentences. I try for simplicity of words and sentences, for concrete language everyone can understand. Feedback from posting some of the homilies on the internet has characterized the homilies as well planned, with ideas placed in a logical and precise order. They have been called “simple, personal, and practical;” “very inspired and insightful;” containing “deep reflection and authentic Christian faith;” and “illustrative, applied and down to earth practical.”

”Caring for the least of these”: Christian women’s short-term mission travel.

$49.99

This dissertation explores how Christian women strategically activated social networks to do short-term mission (STM) and take on new leadership roles, creatively reinventing and rejuvenating themselves through international volunteerism. A growing religious movement, STM carework is a democratized grassroots phenomenon, typically featuring bottom-up entrepreneurial agency rather than top-down central planning and control which lends itself to women’s involvement. This research used global ethnography and visual analysis to examine and theorize how social capital and resource brokering was built locally and globally, bridging and linking women within two respective groups across international spaces: (1) an incorporated not-for-profit medical professional group that traveled regularly to Africa; and (2) a suburban women’s ministry group from a megachurch who conducted a large women’s retreat in the Domincan Republic and also worked in an orphanage. The first group included team members from mainline, Catholic and evangelical traditions. The second group incorporated Latina women from the megachurch’s Hispanic sister congregation, and included four Latina women on the traveling team. Each group’s activities and narratives illuminated the crucial role of cultural brokers to mediate material and symbolic resources essential to the achievement of their work on behalf of those deemed “needy.” Also, examination of normally private marital gender relations revealed that couples negotiated fender roles either in ways they had already practiced (egalitarian) or in exceptional ways (unbending gender roles).;Research on Christian women’s STM resource brokering contributes to studies on congregations, volunteerism, civil society, social capital, faith-based initiatives, international development, women’s religion, tourism, pilgrimage, and religion and globalization. Both professional and stay-at-home mothers benefitted from regularized church/state funding structures (pooled

''Oh, for a thousand tongues to sing'': Music and worship in African American megachurches of Los Angeles, California.

”Oh, for a thousand tongues to sing”: Music and worship in African American megachurches of Los Angeles, California.

$49.99

This dissertation is an ethnographic account of African American sacred music performed in the worship services of African American megachurches in Los Angeles, California. A megachurch is a church with a congregation of at least five thousand members or one whose Sunday morning services has at least twenty-five hundred people in attendance. To illustrate how African American religious music traditions have been maintained and changed, I have documented and examined the musical styles preferred by members of three predominantly African American megachurches in metropolitan Los Angeles: First African Methodist Episcopal Church, West Angeles Church of God in Christ, and Faithful Central Bible Church.;Scholars have demonstrated that ethnic identity and the social realities of African Americans are often expressed in their music. As the conditions of Black life in America change, so does the music produced by African Americans, causing stylistic changes to be inevitable. However, there are times when stylistic changes are deliberately adopted to create an ideal environment or familiar atmosphere in a new context. The emergence of African American megachurches in cities across the country over the last thirty years has provided new contexts for African American Christian worship.;Through comparative analysis of the three congregations as well as a case study of the Faithful Central, I have: (1) delineated how Black megachurches are preserving older genres of African American sacred music (i.e. hymns, spirituals, classic gospel), (2) described the musical and non-musical factors that influence the music preferences of congregations, and (3) described the degree(s) to which some large urban congregations are adapting praise and worship to overcome the challenges to interactive and intimate worship.;To place these churches within the context of the historic Black Church tradition, I present information on African American sacred music, the gospel music community of Los

”We are all as one fish in the sea…”. Catholicism in Protestant Pennsylvania: 1730–1790.

$49.99

This work is a study of colonial Catholicism in eastern Pennsylvania. Although Catholicism was one of the major religions of the European world, few have studied its first transitions to America. Pennsylvania Quakers in the Philadelphia area created a society and government modeled on Great Britain and British law but with a difference: religious tolerance for other Christian sects. They allowed and encouraged the unfettered immigration of a diverse European Christian population, mostly Protestant but including hated Catholics. This fundamentalist and rigid Christian Church arrived with English and German Jesuits. These priests as leaders took up a non-threatening political stance early in the 18th century. Pennsylvania was the only colony that allowed them entrance. The Quakers started a new ethnically diverse and religiously tolerant province where religions competed for members. Catholics could safely grow and prosper.;Even though social and political events in Protestant Pennsylvania brought attempts to eject the priests at points, such as at the start of the French and Indian War, the government failed to respond to the supposed civic Catholic threat that was articulated by many of the Protestant clergy. Catholics were positive members of the colony and assisted colonial authorities whenever possible. The Catholic population made a positive cultural impact, participating in a broad array of educational, financial, military, and civic associations. In early manufacturing enterprises, mercantile operations, and technical or scientific innovations, Catholics became a substantial economic force. As many prospered, they built churches and schools for their congregations.;As the Revolutionary War approached, Pennsylvania and the Philadelphia region anchored the rebellion of the American colonies. Its geographical location and its colonial humanistic policies including religious toleration, offered physical protection, ideological neutrality and tactical centrality

Although I hold no position in the denominational and non-denominational worship centers, the reason I created this book is because church affiliations constantly debate over whose doctrine is right and whose doctrine is wrong. Many congregations are wasting too much time and material on spreading this kind of ‘disease’ by trying to decide another Christian’s eternity instead of maintaining their own. Through my 35-year attendances, I was able to accumulate teachings that slandered, condemned, and self-exalted one assembly against another. Now I’ve listed and examined 13 church-dividing, biblical topics through the interpretation and practices of both affiliations–arriving to conclusions on the matter.

''Words that hurt, words that heal'' United Methodist worship and gender language 1972-1992.

”Words that hurt, words that heal” United Methodist worship and gender language 1972-1992.

$49.99

In nineteen-sixty-eight, the Methodist Church and Evangelical United Brethren Church merged to form the United Methodist Church. With the inception of this new denomination came the opportunity for liturgical reform. The newly formed denomination established a Commission on Worship that broke ground theologically and ecumenically, developing alternate texts for the sacraments and rites of Christian worship. Concurrently, in the late 1960s feminist theologians challenged the patriarchal constructs of religion, focusing on the prevalence and injustice of sexist language. Awareness and advocacy for change in gender language was the product of the Inclusive Language Movement, which greatly influenced the development of the United Methodist liturgical texts.;This dissertation addresses the historical development of these rites converging on the intersection of the Inclusive Language Movement and liturgy in United Methodist rites of Word and Table, Baptism, and Ordination from 1972 to 1992. The evaluation of the rites is guided by the gender analysis methodology of Marjorie Procter-Smith, comparative liturgy methodology of Anton Baumstark interpreted by Robert Taft, and the literary critical method of Joyce Ann Zimmerman. The primary focus of the dissertation is on the linguistic textual patterns signifying humanity, Jesus, God, and the Trinity. Analysis of the pedagogical rubrics and textual content points to a pattern of acceptance, resistance and revision of gender language and imagery in these texts. This pattern further identifies a constructed essentialism of Trinitarian language employed in these liturgical texts. The dissertation concludes with specific recommendations as well as rationale for increased use of emancipatory language in United Methodist worship. The primary texts sources used are the available drafts of the texts, committee and board minutes, correspondence, published editions of the texts, and personal interviews. The dissertation includes an

It has often been suggested that Luke’s two volumes were written as an apology for Christianity, to demonstrate to the Roman authorities that the new faith was not a dangerous and subversive innovation, a threat to the Pax Romana and to Roman rule. This book reviews the development of the ‘traditional perspective’, then raises some questions, e.g. if Luke was writing an apologia pro ecclesia, why does he include so much material politically damaging to the Christian cause? Is it possible that the approach has been made from the wrong angle, that Luke was writing an apologia not pro ecclesia but pro imperio, to assure his fellow Christians that Church and Empire need not fear or suspect each other? This conclusion is then supported by an investigation of the text of Luke-Acts, particularly the trials of Jesus and Paul. This challenging volume will be of interest to students and scholars of the New Testament and to ecclesiastical and Roman historians.

‘Holy, Holier, Holiest’: The Sacred Topography of the Early Medieval Church

This book explores the morphology of early medieval Irish religious settlement. It seeks to shift the focus of academic interest away from simply the materiality of settlement towards a greater concern for its possible theological significance. The critical literature is reviewed and the archaeological and literary evidence revisited in search of evidence for a consistent early medieval Irish schema for the layout of religious settlement. This study suggests that the enclosure and zoning of religious space was primarily inspired by depictions of the Jerusalem Temple through the medium of a universally received scriptural ‘canon of planning’. The distinctive early Irish religious landscape is a result of the convergence of this Christian exemplar of ordered holy space with vernacular building forms. These building forms were shaped by the legacy of Ireland’s recent pagan past, whose architectural leitmotif was the circular or sub-circular form, in contrast to the buildings described in Christian texts. Some of the traditional assumptions about the possible heterodox nature of the ecclesiology of the early medieval Irish church are also challenged. Irish religious topography is set within the context of a universal Christian understanding of holy space which impacts upon the topography of religious settlement not just in Ireland but further afield in Anglo-Saxon England, Gaul and the Middle East. In this the book, like many other recent studies, challenges the presumption that there was a ‘Celtic church’ distinctive in its practices from the wider church, while documenting the local contribution to Christian architecture.

“The first thing I noticed about Ken Dignan when I walked into his Sunday School class at Stone Church 1972 was obvious handicap. Within five minutes my focus moved from his handicap to his gifts. The Ken Dignan I know today is an unusual man of God, a student of the Word with wonderful teaching and ministry gifts. Ken’s life is an inspiration to me, not just because he has dealt so remarkably with his handicap, but because Ken is truly a man who wants no more than to please God with his life.”"This book, Ken’s first, is more than just a book on the subject of divine healing. It is a book about Christian growth, spiritual maturity, and infinite trust in a sovereign God. It goes beyond the clichés and the pat answers. It digs down to where we live and gets to the tougher questions that we sometimes would just as soon avoid.”"Take time to read this book carefully and prayerfully, because it has something very important to say to you and for that matter, all the body of Christ.”Jerry Rose President, WCFC-TV / Channel 38(Christian Television: Chicago)Former, President, The National Religious Broadcasters

We are thinking of getting married, but he wants us to marry in a church since that’s really important to him and his family.

I don’t particularly mind marrying in a church, but don’t I have to be Christian to marry in a Christian church ?

Just pretend for a little bit. Geesh, I’m at a Christian High school.
