Through careful historical and contemporary analysis, the authors address such issues as: how much Christian action is required to make a whole society Christian; Puritan New England as case study; Christian principles vs. baptised ideology in the Revolutionary period; the stumbling block of incorrect views of America’s history for effective Christian involvement in critical public issues; the relationship of Christian convictions to political or social agendas; learning to think historically as a guard against shortsighted or simplistic approaches. Ample footnotes and a bibliographical essay make this volume a helpful reference tool for further study of the Christian nation debate and related issues. Mark A. Christian Basics: A Primer for Pilgrims $13 “Christians looking for a refresher course in the essentials of their faith and general inquirers seeking to know the historic beliefs of Christianity will find answers to their questions in Christian Basics. Arranging basic theological beliefs in a narrative form, Christian Basics highlights the Christian story as Scripture tells it: it begins with creation and moves on to discuss the Fall, God’s covenants with Noah and Israel, Jesus Christ, the church, salvation and consummation. Both the prologue and the epilogue of this story focus on God, an intentional structure which shows that the Christian story is grounded in the purposes of the triune God. Supporting this narrative are various charts that portray the “chapters” in the Christian story, different views on the Atonement, ways of understanding the Bible in relation to the traditions of the church and human experience, the diverse aspects of the church’s mission, and the relation of clergy to laity. In simple language with a creative flair, the authors also confront contemporary issues ranging from science and secularism to the rise of fundamentalism and to the “new age” spirituality, offering guidelines for living a spiritually rich life as well as a summary of the Christian doctrines. A glossary is included to aid readers in understanding theological terms. As a jointly written project, this book draws on the experience of both men and women in the interpretation of Christian faith, an important perspective in a day when inclusivity of viewpoint is crucial. The authors’ shared pastoral and teaching background roots their writing deeply in the life and mission of the church, and their discussion is permeated by a joyful gratitudethat readers will find inspiring. This practical guide promises to be as fundamental an introduction to Christian belief and life as John Stott’s Basic Christianity.” |

This series is appropriate for small groups, churches, and Sunday school classes. It offers seekers and believers alike the kind of reasonable, factual answers that inspire faith, conviction, and trust in the reality and claims of Christ.” |

”The Lord of the Rings” and the emerging generation: A study of the message and medium. J. R. R. Tolkien and Peter Jackson. $49.99 Throughout the ages, the communication of Christian truth has been the domain of preachers and poets, musicians and theologians, authors and dramatists, each seeking means by which to engage others in the truth that has captivated and transformed their lives. From direct proposition to allegorical representation, such effective communicators as Dwight L. Moody and C. S. Lewis have confronted their culture with Christian truth in response to Jesus’ command to “go and make disciples”. J. R. R. Tolkien employed myth as his vehicle of expression, creating The Lord of the Rings (LOTR) with no overt religious symbol or act, yet weaving his Roman Catholic Christian worldview into the very fabric of his characters and their journeys. Tolkien described his work as a “fundamentally religious and Catholic work, unconsciously at first, but consciously in the revision, with religious element absorbed into the story.”1 He discovered that myth allows the reader opportunity to explore the realities of life within the safety of an imagined world and its relationship.;Tolkien’s fantasy of Middle Earth and her people has captured the heart and mind of generations since its publication in 1954, offering glimpses into the truth that defined Tolkien’s life and worldview. This 20th century work found new expression and an even broader audience in Peter Jackson’s 21st century cinematic interpretation LOTR. Together, Tolkien’s myth and Jackson’s cinematic portrayal of that myth have successfully captured the attention of the Emerging generation. A study of both narrative and cinematic mediums along with the clarity of the message conveyed will allow an opportunity to consider the larger question of what medium and what message impacts the emerging post-modern generation. This dissertation will explore the effectiveness of Tolkien’s myth and Jackson’s cinematic interpretation of that myth in communicating truth, seeking insights into effective means of the communication of Christian truth |

‘My Lines and Life’ $61 George Herbert (1593-1633) offers an intriguing case of a poet actively dealing with the problem of authority. Through a reading of Herbert’s main volume of poetry, The Temple: Sacred Poems and Private Ejaculations, Herbert is seen to position the poet’s authority over his verse in relation to the authority of the Christian God. This thesis argues that Herbert entertains an idea of dual authority; that two authors, human and divine, are at work to bring forth the poem. To clarify the notion, the poem is understood as both an act and an artefact: The first is lived, the second recorded in lines of poetry. This duality forms the basis for a poetics of integrity, where the lines and life of the poet must accord in order for the poem to be successful. In extension, Herbert’s view of poetry suggests both an ideal poet as well as an ideal reader, rooted in Herbert’s own Christian identity. |

365 Ways to Market Your Christian Book. Specific People, Places, Procedures $13.59 This book is about the many places to sell Christian books beside Christian bookstores. It gives hundreds of specific ideas, contact names, addresses and methods of getting Christian books in front of potential buyers. It tells authors what to do before and after the 18-wheeler full of books back up the driveway to make sure those books move in and out of the garage, not reside there permanently. Christian bookstores are very unlikely to take a book by an unknown Christian author, (a sad but true fact) and this book tells what to do, and where to sell those books once that reality hits. |

A Brief, Liberal, Catholic Defense of Abortion $23.13 The Catholic church has always opposed abortion, but — contrary to popular belief — not always for the same reasons. This tightly argued, historically grounded study sets out to demonstrate that a pro-choice stance, now held by a significant minority of Catholics, is as fully justified by Catholic thought as an anti-abortion view, and may even be more compatible with Catholic tradition than the current opposition to abortion espoused by many Catholics and most Catholic leaders.A Brief, Liberal, Catholic Defense of Abortion argues that the current Catholic anti-abortion stance is justified neither by modern embryology nor by ancient church teachings. Combining up-to-date information on fetal development with a thorough grasp of the works of the church’s early thinkers, Daniel A. Dombrowski and Robert Deltete expose crucial contradictions between the early and the modern church’s views of abortion.Returning to the writings of two pillars of early Christian thought, Sts. Augustine and Thomas Aquinas, the authors show that abortion was originally condemned by the church on the grounds of perversity, since it nullified the only permissible reason for sexual relations: procreation. Only in more recent times has the view arisen of abortion as indefensible on the ontological grounds that human personhood begins at the moment of conception. The authors demonstrate that the early church’s view of fetal development — delayed hominization, in which the fetus is endowed with a human soul only when it achieves a physical human body — is diametrically opposed to the current anti-abortion stance. In fact, the authors show, the insistence on immediate hominization that provides thefoundation for the current pro-life view stems from two seventeenth-century scientific misconceptions — preformationism and the homunculus — that have since been thoroughly discredited.By considering the history of Catholic thought in its relation to the history of science, Dombrowski |

A Climate for Change $14.99 Most Christian lifestyle or environmental books focus on how to live in a sustainable and conservational manner. A CLIMATE FOR CHANGE shows why Christians should be living that way, and the consequences of doing so. Drawing on the two authors” experiences, one as an internationally recognized climate scientist and the other as an evangelical leader of a growing church, this book explains the science underlying global warming, the impact that human activities have on it, and how our Christian faith should play a significant role in guiding our opinions and actions on this important issue. |

A Cloud of Witnesses: The Cult of Saints in Past and Present $72 From 11 to 16 August 2003, the nineteenth international congress of the Societas Liturgica was held in Veldhoven (the Netherlands), with as its theme “A Cloud of Witnesses: Saints and role models in Christian liturgy”. The present publication contains a collection of nineteen case studies reflecting the versatility of the congress in its variations and themes, its scope in time (from early Christian times to the present day), and the fact that many churches and religious communities as well as the Jewish tradition are represented. The collection contains a number of articles that reflect on subjects like the phenomenon of saintliness, heortology, the dimensions of time and space in ritual-liturgical practice, and saints and canonizations in the present-day Roman Catholic and Protestant church. The last section consists of contributions on saints and forms of saint’s cult by a number of authors, based on their own religious communities, such as the Old Catholic Church, Anglican Church, Dissenting Free Church, Reformed Church and ecumenical movement. The editors of this collection have by way of an introduction compiled a historiographic-bibliographic overview relating to saints and their cults in various research domains, specifically within liturgical studies, also touching upon certain specific, and for this collection interesting, themes such as the position of the (cult of) saints in cultural and historical studies, Protestant traditions, and the Feminist Liturgical Movement.
