BACKGROUND MATERIAL FOR TEACHERS, Old Testament Bible Survey Course, Genesis — Esther

BACKGOUND MATERIAL FOR TEACHERS, Book One, surveys the first seventeen Old Testament books for Bible teachers of youth and adults. Teachers must build a firm foundation for studying/teaching the Old Testament by answering ten questions:What is the Old Testament? Who wrote the Old Testament? Where, When, Why and How was the Old Testament written? What are three major features of the Old Testament: Revelation, Inspiration and Preservation? How should we study the Word of God? Why should you memorize the Word of God? When should one read the Word of God?Teachers must also build a personal knowledge through surveying the Old Testament utilizing four areas of study: INTRODUCTORY MATERIAL for the first two sections of the Old Testament; BACKGROUND INFORMATION about the author and book; “TEACHER’S STUDY GUIDE” for each of the 17 books; PRESENTATION MATERIAL for teachers [a teaching survey presented by a Scripture verse or passage].Following high school, a Bachelor of Science degree was received from Piedmont College, Demorest, GA plus a Georgia Teacher’s Professional Certificate. Then came the Army Security Agency and three years later came employment with the National Security Agency, Washington, DC. Meeting Edith Campen from North Carolina led to marriage, February 1, 1957.A year after marriage, God called me to the ministry. Graduating from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Ft. Worth, TX with a Bachelor of Divinity (updated to Masters of Divinity) and Masters in Religious Education (updated to Masters of Arts), God directed me to serve Him.For some 50 years, it was a pleasure to serve God and people in churches and classrooms as Minister of Youth, Minister of Education, Minister of Education/Administration, and Minister of Pastoral Care. It was a joy to teach this Old Testament Bible Survey Course to ninth grade students at Cypress Community Christian School, Houston, TX

My complete surrender to the Lord as a young man of 22, was the best decision I ever made. The second best decision was to marry Lois Tyson, whom I met at Bob Jones University in 1951.I spent my boyhood days, first on a farm and then in a small town during the years of the Great Depression of the 1930s. Then came World War 2, when I was in high school. It was a long war; 1941-45.As soon as I graduated I went into the U.S. Navy and served as a seaman aboard the U.S.S. Pocono, the Flagship of the Atlantic Fleet. After leaving the Navy in 1946, I attended the University of Pittsburgh by virtue of the G.I. Bill, which paid college tuition and books for World War 2 servicemen. I graduated in June 1950, with a major in Business Administration and a minor in History.During my senior year at Pitt, I was under deep conviction of my need of complete surrender to the Lord. I had been raised in a Christian home and we went to a fundamental church, but I had too many distractions (the war years and getting a college education) to get serious about spiritual things. However, the “Hound of Heaven” tracked me down and in December of 1950, I made that greatest decision of all, to completely surrender to the Lord Jesus Christ as my Savior and Lord. I said, “Lord Jesus, I am yours and You are mine.” I never looked back. Thus began a great journey of faith and service. Within the pages of “…but to minister,” I tell this wondrous story. I hope you enjoy it.God bless you.

100 GOD-BLOGSThe heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. (Psalm 19:1) If we look carefully, we can see illustrations of Biblical truth in the world around us. That is the idea behind these GOD-BLOGS. They are a collection of devotional thoughts originally written in weekly installments to a list of subscribers. Some are humorous; some are sad; some are challenging; and some are comforting. All of them are taken from some part of the author’s life. He hopes they will help the readers spot glimpses of God’s truth in their daily lives, too. A lengthy topic (keyword) index is in the back of the book to help readers find specific topics of interest, which is especially helpful for preachers and Bible teachers.Phil Walter wants to be an agent of God’s peace, a messenger of God’s truth, and a servant of God’s love. During his 43 years of service to Christ and the church, he has strived to fulfill that calling by serving as an ordained minister/pastor, an ordained missionary, an ordained church elder, a field chaplain for the local sheriff’s office, a church administrator, the producer of a city-wide Christian theatrical outreach event, an administrative director for a national ministry, and a youth minister. In all his work, he has a heart for people. This was one of the reasons he wrote this book. He wants to help people walk with God each day.By God’s grace, Phil is the proud father of five wonderful children and the grandfather of nine amazing grandchildren. He has been married to his lovely wife, Susan, for 42 years and they live in Winter Garden, Florida.

The past five decades have altered the role of the churches. The third millennium will bring an even more radically different context for ministry. How the parish minister meets the challenge of that change is the subject of this latest book by best-selling author Lyle E. Schaller. Schaller makes the statistics speak by discussing four dozen factors that will provide challenges and opportunities in the next millennium. These include the emergence of thousands of new independent congregations, economic factors that affect rural congregations, the inability of most churches to be truly inclusive, the fact that the church has replaced the home and school as the primary channel for learning values, the growth of the Christian day school, the almost total disappearance of the geographical parish, the increasing competition for communication, the change in women’s role in the community. “Change is the dominant theme of this book. The response of church leaders to the changes identified here will shape the future of their institutions. More important, however, these responses will determine who will be most effective in proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ in the early decades of the millennium”.

2nd VICTORY IN JESUS is the third volume of THE GOINS BRICOLAGE, a saga of Tecumseh and Stonewall Counties in the State of Indiana. It is the second part of the tale of Lamar Ainsley Goins, an inept, middle-aged minister of the Gospel who despite himself achieves national and even international success in the late 1970s and early 80s as pastor of The Temple of Holy Truth & World Outreach Center of Aschburgh. Lamar Ainsley Goins, the youngest child of the late Wilton Fox Goins, the greatest man ever to emerge from Aschburgh, has now settled into his unanticipated success, and sets his eye on ministering to a better educated and more affluent clientele to the north of Indianapolis. He puts in motion a plan to get rid of his Pentecostal ties, his grubby, down-at-the-heels Prophetess OnFire, as well as his working-class Board members and song-leader, while improving his grammar and adding the Rabboni Barry Wolfowitz, a dynamic trumpet-playing and yarmulke-wearing ersatz Christian-Jew. As Lamar finally achieves the Victory for which he seems to have been destined, the ever conniving founding pastor of the Temple, Doctor Carter Bald, no longer pursued by the FBI and IRS, returns to Tecumseh County with a plan to take back the church and destroy Lamar’s ministry.

MEET JESUS… Evangelist and teacher Reverend Brenda Salter McNeil thinks evangelism that only introduces people to Jesus is incomplete. The picture is much larger than that, she claims: Christ’s death and resurrection reconcile us to God and to each other across gender, race and social lines. …AND SAM. Jesus’ encounter with the Samaritan woman, introduced here as Brenda’s friend Sam, gives us the full picture of gospel reconciliation-reconciliation with God and with one another. Along the way Brenda also offers her own story of coming to Christ. A Credible Witness moves us to be people whose evangelism happens through right relationship with God and others. ‘In today’s world,’ Brenda writes, “we too are called to embody more than one type of reconciliation. The good news brings us to God, and it also brings life and healing to a broken, dying and divided world. Anything less is not the gospel.”…”A church that is not unified is a scandal and a contradiction of the gospel…. [This] book will guide us on a journey to becoming a countercultural people who truly live out the values of the kingdom of God.” From the foreword by Tony Campolo, Ph.D., professor emeritus, Eastern University….Brenda Salter McNeil is an ordained Christian minister, teacher and evangelist. A Handbook For Heretics: From Religion to the Kingdom of God

A Handbook For Heretics: From Religion to the Kingdom of God

$8.64

A Handbook for Heretics discusses the differences between religion and the Kingdom of God. Many mainline churches resist the current reformation, a gradual movement away from traditional Christianity toward a vital spirituality. Its adherents are frequently labeled “heretics” when in fact they are actually the leading edge of a new spiritual age. They are discovering the “much more” which Jesus promised to tell us, such spiritual phenomena as out-of-body and near-death experiences, pre-birth and post-death appearances, angel communication, and “coincidental” experiences. A Handbook for Heretics reconsiders some traditional Christian doctrines so as to broaden the church’s view of spiritual reality.About the Author:John W. Sloat, a former Presbyterian minister, served churches in Pennsylvania and Ohio. He holds a B.A. from Denison University, 1954; an M.Div. from Princeton Seminary, 1957; and a Th.M. from Pittsburgh Seminary, 1977. Previous books include Lord, Make Us One (non-fiction, 1986) and The Other Half (fiction, 2001). Several of his sermons have been included in Pulpit Digest, a national preaching journal. He is married to Helen Burdick Sloat, a psychiatric nurse, and they have three children and eight grandchildren. A pianist and organist, Sloat also plays the French horn, is a scratch model builder and leads spirituality groups.

I Propose, this morning, to continue our review of the history of this church, and have selected the words of the text because they seem an appropriate description of the character of its fourth pastor, Rev. Peter Thacher, D. D. After the death of Dr. Cooper, December 12th, 1783, the pulpit was supplied for some weeks by the ministers of the association and neighborhood, who, in turn, preached to the bereaved flock. What arrangements were then made for the supply of the pulpit, I cannot ascertain. In the following spring, Wednesday, the 12th of May, was set apart to be observed, say the records, “as a day of solemn humiliation and prayer, to implore the blessing of God upon this society, and the influences of his Holy Spirit to direct us to the choice of such a minister as shall adorn the Christian character, promote thehonor and interest of his Divine Master, and be of the most important advantage to us and to our children.” The deacons were appointed a committee “to ask the favor of the pastors of the associated churches, and the Rev. Mr. Howard of this town to lead in the solemn exercises of the day.” It does not appear, however, that this observance was followed by any immediate steps towards the choice of a pastor. Indeed, so far as the records show, nothing more was done in relation to this subject till the following October, when a movement was made to obtain the services of the Rev. Peter Thacher, then settled in the neighboring town of Malden. Dr. Palfrey, in alluding to the circumstances attending this call, says in a note to his sermon, ” As this transaction is recent, and many of those whose judgments differed upon it survive, I do not give a detailed account of it.”

A WISE MAN’S HEART DISCERNETH BOTH TIME AND JUDG- Mekt. — Ecol. viii. 5. Jack W. Hayford about TV Christian ministers divorcing?

Jack W. Hayford, on Daystar Texas Christian TV, said that, in his opinion, very high profile Christian ministers who divorce should step back for awhile vs immediately preaching next week’s sermon so to speak.

Apparently Jack W. Hayford was hinting at high profile TV Christian ministers such as Juanita Bynum, Bishop Thomas Weeks, and Randy and Paula White.

Jack W. Hayford said that Christian ministers in leadership should ideally have a code of ethics which is a little different than how divorce may be looked at in the ~ celebrity camps of ~ Hollywood, sports, etc.

Apparently parts of the Protestant world are like parts of the European Catholic world where events such as child crimes/whatever are too often overlooked/made light of aka the Non-Profit Religious Business As Usual continues. Parts of the moderate Islamic world also tend to ignore/make light of the extremist/terrorist actions of extreme Islam aka the Non-Profit Religious Business As Usual continues.

I agree with Jack.

I think time off should be taken even by Pastors who aren’t on TV every week.

And when a Pastor ruins his own marriage due to his own intentional sin, and refuses to repent, that should disqualify that Pastor from every being a Pastor again.

Ditto for a Pastor who divorces his wife for a non Biblical reason or who is divorced by his wife and she has a Biblical reason.

Pastors need to be good role models and certain actions can disqualify a person from Pastoral ministry for the rest of their lives.

Obviously this needs to be looked at on a case by case basis.

I say all this as a Pastor who has been thru a divorce.

My wife divorced me for a non Biblical reason.

In fact, I had a Biblical reason to divorce her and I choose not to divorce her and choose to forgive her sin and work on making our marriage work.

Eventually she divorced me for a non Biblical reason.

Even though I was the innocent party, I took several years off from full time active ministry.
